Two solar plants tied to energy supply contracts with Australian telco firm Telstra have been commissioned.

Spanish energy company Naturgy commissioned a 260MW solar PV plant in Glenellen in New South Wales, and a 96MW solar project in Bundaberg, Queensland. The works were completed through Naturgy’s international generation subsidiary Global Power Generation (GPG).

The two solar parks will provide energy to Telstra under two long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Telstra signed the first PPA in December 2023 for the Bundaberg plant and followed up with another PPA in September 2024 for the Glenellen plant. Per the terms of the PPA, Telstra committed to purchasing 100 percent of the capacity from the Bundaberg plant, and 50 percent of the capacity from the Glenellen plant.

The Bundaberg solar plant is Naturgy’s first project in Queensland, and the Glenellen solar farm is Naturgy’s largest in Australia. Following commissioning, Naturgy now has 1.3GW of operational capacity in Australia. In addition, the company has a further 500MW under construction, and a 2GW pipeline across the country.

Telstra has signed several clean energy agreements to support its operations in Australia. In September 2023, the company signed a PPA with Munna Creek Solar Farm Investments to purchase the output of the Munna Creek Solar Farm in Queensland. Before this, it inked a PPA with Ark Energy in 2022 to procure from the 923.4MW MacIntyre Wind Farm in Queensland, and has previously signed deals with RES Australia to procure the output of a solar farm in Queensland, and wind farms in New South Wales and Victoria.
