A 3,118 sqm (33,561 sq ft) data center has been proposed in Katoomba, southeastern Australia.
The data center would be located at 41-45 Barton Street, which is an address in a residential neighborhood next to a public school in the region of the Blue Mountains, New South Wales.
The data center would be split into two wings and accompanied by three generator buildings.
The estimated development cost of the facility would be AUD$4.8m (USD$3.3m), according to the application form.
Details about the capacity of the data center are unavailable. The data center applicant is listed as the Council Approval Group, an Australian Council planning specialist.
The application was made on May 15, and the council is currently in the process of notifying affected properties nearby.
The project has attracted significant attention in a Facebook group for Katoomba residents, with some expressing concern about the data center’s use of resources, its noise impact, and the suitability of its location.
There appear to be no data centers in Katoomba, according to Data Center Map. Katoomba is located west of Sydney, which is one of Australia’s largest data center markets.
