The ‘Stop Dirty Data Centres’ campaign group has planned a number of anti-data center protests across Europe on November 6-7.

More than 100 groups are involved in the events, across the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Poland, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, and France.

Stop Dirty Data Centres “is a campaign to call for a moratorium—a temporary pause until social and environmental concerns are addressed —on large-scale data center development across Europe,” the group states.

“The moratorium is a mechanism to force robust consideration of the harms of this infrastructure and to create space for public debate about what kind of digital infrastructure society actually needs, where it should be built, and under what conditions, especially environmental ones.”

Among the protests is a march in Dublin, a walking tour of Canary Wharf data centers, a march to the Scottish parliament, protests outside data centers in Finland and Denmark, and a protest walk along the Manzanares River in Madrid.

A protest outside of a planned Pure DC and Microsoft data center was followed by hundreds of activists breaking into the construction site. Activist group Geef Tegengas is not a recognized member of Stop Dirty Data Centres, but the two protests occurred simultaneously.

The European anti-data center movement has steadily been growing, but this week was galvanized by a US election that saw a number of data center moratoria passed, and anti-data center candidates elected.
