Hot house? Here’s how to keep it cool

SunflowerA number of UK homes are already at risk of overheating, with rising temperatures expected to increase the problem as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.

The warning comes as the Met Office issues another heatwave alert for parts of the UK today, prompting renewed attention on how well homes are equipped to cope with prolonged periods of hot weather.

With much of the UK’s housing stock designed to retain heat during colder months, some property commentators say homeowners may need to take additional steps to keep indoor temperatures down. Karl McArdle, co-founder of The Property Buying Company, has shared practical measures homeowners can take to help keep their properties cooler during the current heatwave.

+ Avoid opening windows during the day: It might feel natural to open your windows to cool your house down, but during the day, this can actually bring warmer air into your home. Instead, for windows that face the sun, keep blinds and curtains closed to block out heat. Where it’s safe to do so, open windows at night to allow cooler air to circulate.

+ Internal heat sources: Check your central heating is switched off or not running on a pre-set schedule during warmer months. Turn off appliances when they’re not in use, as they can generate unnecessary heat indoors. Switching to energy-efficient LED bulbs can also help reduce heat output. You may even want to limit oven or hob use where possible, as cooking can quickly raise indoor temperatures.

+ Use fans efficiently: Electric fans can help to ventilate your home, provided the existing temperature is below 35°C. Shut the door on any unused rooms to make the most of this. To remove warm air, use an extractor fan where available, particularly in bathrooms after showering or when humidity levels are high.

+ Install heat reflective window film: Heat reflective window film is an effective and affordable way to keep your house cool, reducing heat absorption from the sun by up to 90%.

+ Create shade around your home: Planting trees around your home can help to block direct sunlight from reaching windows and external walls, which will help to keep your home cooler. For a more immediate solution, consider installing an awning to help create shade for your doors and windows and limit heat gain.

The new viewing question: how hot does this property get?
