BW Group is to develop a data center in Norway.
Frier Vest and BW Velora this week entered into an agreement to develop a large-scale data center with associated infrastructure in the Frier Vest industrial park in Grenland, a district in Telemark county, in the south-east of Norway.
The project will total 250MW at full build-out. Further details haven’t been shared.
“Over a hundred years of solid industrial expertise, access to renewable power and good logistics connections make Grenland – and Telemark in general – very attractive for industrial establishments, said BW Velora director and co-founder Nils Kristian Liveng-Ness.
Frier Vest is one of Norway’s largest industrial estates, totaling 1,800 acres close to the Frierfjord fjord. In development since 2022 and set to include a new port terminal, the area is owned by Grenland Havn, SIVA, and Bamble Municipality.
“The agreement with BW Velora is a first important step in realizing the ambition to create the industrial area of the future at Frier Vest, which provides room for industry, knowledge and growth,” said Frier Vest general manager Sven Ombudstvedt. “Digital infrastructure is a prerequisite for almost all new industrial establishments. The significant investments by BW Velora make it even more interesting for other businesses to establish themselves in the same area.”
Established last year by BW Group units BW Digital and BW ESS, BW Velora is a digital infrastructure development firm focused on developing and commercializing sites in the Nordic region and Canada.
Through BW Digital, the wider group owns the Hawaiki subsea cable system and is developing a large campus in Batam, Indonesia, and a new cable to link the site to Singapore. BW ESS is a global Battery Energy Storage (BESS) owner and operator.
