Swedish data center firm EcoDataCenter has acquired land in central Sweden for a new campus.

The company this week announced it has signed an agreement with Smedjebacken Municipality for the purchase of 52 hectares of land to build its third data center campus in the Dalarna region.

The planned campus could total 150MW with potential opportunity to expand further. Construction is expected to begin as soon as building and environmental permits are finalized, which is anticipated in early 2027.

Smedjebacken is a town and municipality in Dalarna County in central Sweden, some 200km west of Stockholm. The agreement follows a letter of intent between the two parties that has been in place since 2019.

The new site would be EcoDataCenter’s third campus in the region, following its original site in Falun and a second facility in Borlänge.

“We have our roots in the region, and being able to continue to grow here is very important to us. We’ve had many productive discussions with Smedjebacken since 2019, and we are now taking the next step in this establishment,” said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter. “Smedjebacken has been a strong partner throughout this process, and that partnership is what allows us to grow responsibly and reliably.”

EcoDataCenter’s high ambitions on sustainability were a decisive factor in the municipality’s decision,” added Fredrik Rönning, chair of the municipal executive board, Smedjebacken Municipality.

EcoDataCenter was formed in 2015 as a joint venture between local energy company Falu Energi & Vatten and data center operator EcoDC AB. Nordic real estate developer Areim took a majority stake in the firm in 2018, merging it with Swedish operator Fortlax in 2019.

In April 2025, EcoDataCenter sold three facilities in Sweden to CapMan Infra as part of a hyperscale pivot. Two of the data centers were located in Stockholm and one in Piteå.

The company launched its first data center in Falun in 2019, and the site could total 80MW at full build-out. Ground was broken on the Borlänge site in September 2025. The first phase, due to launch in 2027, is set to offer 250MW, with potential to reach more than 360MW.

EcoDataCenter customers include Mistral AI, language AI company DeepL and AI cloud firm CoreWeave.
