CDC Data Centres is planning a new gigawatt-scale campus in New South Wales, Australia.
The company has announced that it is “exploring the opportunity” to build a new data center campus within an established industrial and waste‑management cluster in Gregadoo, on the south‑eastern edge of Wagga Wagga.
“A CDC data center in Gregadoo would provide essential and secure data capacity to support the Riverina and NSW more broadly and position the region as a key part of Australia’s digital economy,” the company said on its website.
Wagga Wagga is a city in the Riverina region of New South Wales, some 455km (283 miles) southwest of Sydney and more than 230km (143 miles) west of Canberra.
According to a SEARs application with the New South Wales government, the campus would be located on vacant land at 216 Ashfords Road, Gregadoo, approximately 11km (seven miles) south of the Wagga Wagga city center.
The 103.4-hectare site could host up to four single-story data centers totaling a combined 189,325 sqm (two million sq ft) and up to 1.4GW of capacity. Two on-site substations are also planned.
Built out in phases, each building would total 47,275 sqm (508,865 sq ft) and 240MW of capacity. Up to AU$15 billion (US$10.4bn) could be invested, according to the Wagga Wagga government.
CDC said the site would use closed-loop cooling systems to reduce water use. It would feature up to 384 diesel generators and 13MW of rooftop solar panels.
The grid-connected campus would be located approximately 1.3km (0.8 miles) from the new TransGrid Wagga Terminal Station.
Leading Edge DC, an Australian Edge data center firm, has a small facility in Wagga Wagga.
Founded in 2007 and backed by investment firm Infratil, CDC has nearly 20 sites in operation and development across Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Auckland, New Zealand.
It has more than 600MW of data center capacity in operation and development across Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and New Zealand (70MW). The company’s future development pipeline now totals a further 1.6GW out to 2034.
