Jamaican telco Flow has launched its 5G mobile network in the country, becoming the first carrier in the Caribbean island to do so.

Parent company Liberty Latin America (LLA) has launched Flow’s 5G network after investing $74 million to support the rollout.

This consists of $50m in equipment and systems and $24m in spectrum licenses.

Following the company’s launch, 5G coverage is available to more than 70 percent of Jamaica’s population of 2.8 million.

According to Flow’s website, 5G is available in Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, May Pen, and North Coast, and active across 200 sites.

During a media event last week, Jamaica’s Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications, Daryl Vaz, called the launch a significant milestone for the country.

“It is a significant moment. This is more than a faster network. It is the foundation for a smarter economy and a more connected society,” said Vaz, as reported by Jamaica Information Service.

“The launch of Flow’s 5G network today reflects a shared commitment to Jamaica’s future. We applaud Flow for its substantial investment in our telecoms infrastructure, rebuilding after hurricanes, and now introducing cutting-edge technology.”

Liberty Latin America has previously switched on commercial 5G services in Puerto Rico, Panama, Costa Rica, the Cayman Islands, and Barbados.
