Tributes continue to pour in for well-known property auctioneer and television personality Clive Emson who died last month, aged 79.
Emson, founder of Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers and a familiar face to viewers of Homes Under the Hammer, died peacefully on 13 May surrounded by family.
Known across the property sector for his phrase “have gavel, will travel”, Emson built one of the UK’s best-known regional property auction businesses, with offices stretching from Kent to Cornwall.
Over the course of his career, he became widely recognised both within the property auction sector and through regular appearances on daytime television. His company expanded across the South of England, including offices in Maidstone, Exeter, Chelmsford and Fareham.
Emson was awarded an MBE for services to vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in Kent, recognising his charitable work and community involvement.
In recent years, he had stepped back from the day-to-day running of the business, spending more time at his home in Monks Horton, Kent.
June’s auction of 150 lots across southern England, the 226th by the firm, is the first one without chairman Clive since he started the business nearly 27 years ago, with the first auction listing 24 lots and members of the family posting stapled auction catalogues through letterboxes and drumming up interest on the phones.
In the auction preview, published in the online catalogue, his son James Emson, the firm’s managing director, and daughter, Becky Ashman, announced Clive’s passing.
Poignantly, the previews were for decades the space where Clive, 79, would articulate his thoughts, always signing off with “we bid you well”.
James and Becky wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Clive sadly passed away on the 13th May.
“He founded this business in 1989 and instilled his high levels of honesty and integrity into the very DNA of our business.
“His commitment and exemplary standards have become integral to the culture of our company.
“In addition to his accomplishments in developing a leading auction house, he dedicated himself to behind-the-scenes charitable work for three decades.
“His expertise, guidance and support positively impacted so many young people, earning him an MBE in 2019 for his services to vulnerable and disadvantaged youth in Kent.
“He was a selfless man whose humour and passion for life shone out to everyone around him.
“Every life he touched, whether they were colleagues, friends, clients and of course his family would have been left with the impression they had met someone very special.
“We would like to thank those who have taken the time to send their condolences and share their thoughts and memories of Clive with the team and the family.
“It has made this very sad time less overwhelming for us all.”
James Emson stressed that it is very much business as usual, as Clive wished.
