Former Atos subsidiary Bull has announced a €30 million ($35m) five-year contract to provide AI-optimized infrastructure at Sweden’s Mimer AI factory.
Housed at Linköping University’s National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), in partnership with the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), the supercomputer will be based on Bull’s BullSequana XH3500 architecture.
The system was procured by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and co‑funded by the Digital Europe Programme and the Swedish Research Council.
Designed to support advanced AI workloads, the XH3500-based supercomputer will use direct liquid cooling technology and be delivered with “as-a-Service, cloud-style access” to increase flexibility for users. According to Bull, this system will be the first to include accelerators from Edge AI hardware startup Axelera AI.
DCD has contacted Bull for further details regarding the specific hardware deployment.
As part of the contract, Bull will also deliver an integrated AI infrastructure that combines “cloud-enabled supercomputing resources, advanced software layers, and dedicated vertical expertise” in order to support AI use case design and deployment.
Bull will also be responsible for maintaining, supporting, and providing training to end users and teams at NAISS.
“As one of the first AI-only systems deployed by EuroHPC JU, this is an important milestone for NAISS and the AI Factory infrastructure. It will enable SMEs, public sector actors, and researchers to rapidly deploy AI workloads. It is also a key enabler to develop sovereign language models and deliver impact in areas such as life sciences, materials science, and autonomous systems,” said Erik Lindahl, professor at Linköping University and NAISS Director.
“As Bull enters a new chapter as an independent company, this contract illustrates our strategy to accelerate across the full spectrum of advanced computing and AI technologies – delivering sustainable solutions with tangible real-world impact,” added Bull CEO Emmanuel Le Roux. “By supporting the expansion of Mimer AI Factory, Bull reinforces its role as a trusted partner in Europe’s HPC and AI landscape and contributes to the growth of a broad ecosystem of European innovators.”
The French State has completed its acquisition of Bull, the artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and quantum subsidiary of Atos, earlier this month, following the signing of a €404 million ($469m) share purchase agreement between Atos and the French State on July 31, 2025.
Atos relaunched the group as Bull in January 2026, ahead of the subsidiary being carved out as a private, independent company.
Its BullSequana HPC systems form the basis for a number of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, with its X series architecture supporting exascale-class systems, including Europe’s first exascale system, the Jupiter Booster.
