Data center developer Green has announced plans to develop a new data center campus on land it has acquired in the canton of Aargau, northern Switzerland.
The plot in Birr occupies 2.6 million sq ft (250,000 sqm) on a brownfield site named Grossacher and Grändel, previously owned by technology firm ABB. Green did not release details about the facility’s projected compute power or its cost.
When asked for comment, a spokesperson said the firm was unable to provide these estimates, as the project remains in the planning phase.
“Green recognized early on the importance of data centers for the country’s digital development and has played a lasting role in shaping the industry. With the campus in Birr, we are continuing this pioneering work,” said Roger Süess, CEO of Green, in a statement. “We are pleased to carry out this project in a region with which Green has been closely connected for many years. Together with the municipality and the canton, we want to develop the site for the future and create added value for the region.”
The data center campus will be built in phases, said Green, adding that it is also planned to siphon waste heat from the facility’s servers into nearby district heating networks. Computing infrastructure is also likely to be cooled using a closed-loop system, minimizing the data center’s annual water consumption.
The site will also include room for industrial and commercial facilities and parkland open to the general public. Green added that the construction of a new data center campus in Birr would contribute toward strengthening Switzerland’s digital sovereignty and make high-performance compute more accessible to the country’s businesses and public organizations.
Founded in 1995, Green is headquartered in the municipality of Lupfig, also in the canton of Aargau. According to its website, the firm operates seven data centers in Switzerland. In September 2025, it entered the German market, establishing a subsidiary – Green Datacenter Germany GmbH – and conducting assessments of several potential sites for new data center developments outside Frankfurt. If built, its new development in Aargau will help expand a modest data center market, with only two facilities listed in the canton by DataCenterMap and three run by Green itself in Lupfig.
