German neuromorphic supercomputing company SpiNNcloud has rebranded as Sparxity and announced the deployment of a sparse-native computing rack system at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) in Germany.
The company said the multi-million-dollar installation will be used to run sparse machine learning models and large-scale HPC simulations.
In a statement announcing the news, Sparxity said its new brand identity reflects its vision to “only compute what matters.” As concerns around energy consumption and cost continue to plague traditional AI infrastructure deployments, the company said sparse computation reduces the amount of computing and data needed to be moved around, reducing bottlenecks.
This approach is demonstrated by the JSC system, which Sparxity described as “event-based,” meaning it computes only when something happens.
Named Jubis, the cluster has been designed to deliver ten-times faster sparse solver execution, 18x lower energy consumption for event-based ML workloads, and 20x shorter time to an acceptable solution in optimization problems. Once online, the system will be made available for wider HPC and AI applications.
“Model builders have spent years designing around the limits of dense hardware,” said Sparxity co-founder and CEO Hector Gonzalez. “Sparxity exists to unlock what they would build without those limits, by computing only what matters. Our rebrand focuses entirely on the sparse-native approach as a practical foundation for the next generation of AI infrastructure. Our current systems bring sparsity to both HPC and AI, and our collaboration with Jülich Supercomputing Centre, one of the largest supercomputing facilities in Europe, shows the value of that approach at supercomputer scale.”
