Microsoft has signed a land purchase agreement for a site in Grevenbroich in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which could host a data center.

The company revealed on Wednesday, July 1, that it has signed a conditional agreement and aims to use the property to expand its data center footprint in the area.

The purchase is subject to the development of a zoning plan by the city of Grevenbroich.

Details about the exact location of the site and the expected size and capacity of any data center constructed there have not been provided.

Grevenbroich is located northwest of Cologne and southwest of Düsseldorf.

Agnes Heftberger, chairwoman of the management board of Microsoft Germany, said: “North Rhine-Westphalia is a strategically important cloud and AI region for Microsoft. We plan to expand our cloud and AI cluster in the Rhenish mining region with an additional location in Grevenbroich. This expansion means additional investments in the local infrastructure and in the people who live and work there. We look forward to advancing the project together in close coordination with the city of Grevenbroich.”

Klaus Krützen, mayor of the city of Grevenbroich, added: “The planned investment sends a strong signal for Grevenbroich and the entire Rhenish mining region. Our region is undergoing profound structural change, and projects like this demonstrate that new digital infrastructure, new opportunities, and new value creation can emerge here. We want to actively shape this future in close dialogue with Microsoft and with a clear focus on the long-term benefits for our city. The data center will have a far-reaching impact beyond its immediate location and attract new businesses to our city.”

Microsoft is currently developing several sites in North Rhine-Westphalia, around Cologne.

In November 2024, Microsoft announced it was building two data centers in the area, located in Bergheim and Bedburg. The Bergheim site was planned to be a 270,650 sq ft (25,144 sqm) data center on a 20-hectare plot of land at the INKA: terra nova industrial park, with the company breaking ground in March 2026.

Bedburg, meanwhile, would see Microsoft developing an 18-hectare site at the new BEB61 industrial estate in Bedburg. In September 2025, the company revealed plans to develop a third site in Elsdorf.

Microsoft previously said at the start of 2024 that it would invest €3.2 billion ($3.44bn) to double its AI infrastructure and cloud computing capacity in Germany.

The region of North Rhine-Westphalia is located northwest of Frankfurt am Main, Germany’s data center hotspot and the home of Microsoft’s existing cloud region.
