Swedish telco Telia has gone live with the launch of its Telia Critical IoT Connectivity service.
In doing so, Telia claims that its critical IoT service is the first commercially available service in Sweden to use 5G standalone (SA) technology.
The purpose of the service is to provide “secure, stable, and predictable connectivity” for highly demanding Internet of Things (IoT) use cases for a range of sectors including emergency services, energy, transport, industry, and healthcare.
Telia noted that it has built the IoT service over its 5G Standalone (5G SA) network in order to utilize capabilities such as network slicing, ultra-low latency, and increased security.
5G SA is not reliant on older mobile generations and solely uses a 5G core network, as opposed to 5G Non-Standalone (5G NSA), which utilizes a 4G core.
The telco points out that 5G SA is optimized for video and data, and enables smarter network traffic management, ensuring reliable performance for key applications even at peak times.
“Through Telia Critical IoT Connectivity, we’re creating the conditions for companies and organizations to use new digital solutions in the most critical parts of their operations, where the demands are greatest, without compromising security or control,” said Fredrik Stenberg, head of B2B, Telia Sweden.
Telia stated that the service has been created as part of its NorthStar 5G innovation program, which the telco launched in 2023. The purpose of NorthStar is to connect a purpose-built 5G innovation network with Telia’s public 5G network.
The 5G SA network covers 99.9 percent of the country’s population and more than 94 percent of the country’s land area.
The company’s Norwegian unit launched its 5G SA network earlier this year, becoming the first in the country to do so.
