Pure Data Centres has signed a biomethane purchase agreement to power its Dublin, Ireland data center.
Pure DC called the deal the first large-scale cross-border biomethane purchase for a data center, with the operator securing the transfer of 9GWh of certified German biomethane to the Irish gas network over a seven-day period.
The deal builds on a proof-of-concept initiative announced in March, which sought to test the viability of injecting biomethane into a gas network to support the decarbonization of gas-powered data centers. According to the firm, the transaction represents a 9,000-fold increase compared to its proof-of-concept initiative.
The 9GWh of biomethane was produced in 2025 at certified facilities in Germany using waste and residue feedstocks. Pure DC claims that the biomethane is unsubsidized, independently certified under the ISCC scheme, and compliant with Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II and RED III.
The transaction supports Pure DC’s strategy of using biomethane to achieve its net-zero by 2040 goal.
“This milestone supports Ireland’s Climate Action Plan and aligns with the LEU policy, under which data centers must meet at least 80 percent of their annual energy demand with additional renewable electricity. By demonstrating that cross-border biomethane can be procured, mass balanced, and registered at volume through existing infrastructure, we are helping to pave the way for broader data center sector adoption as well as other industries seeking a credible route to decarbonize natural gas,” said Maria Jose Rivas Duarte, director of Sustainability at Pure DC.
The deal follows Pure DC’s announcement of an integrated carbon removal platform through its climate tech subsidiary, A Healthier Earth. Other sustainability initiatives undertaken by the company include a living wall at its North London campus. The 7,400 sqm (79,642 sq ft) installation will adorn the second building at the company’s Brent Cross campus after planning permission for the wall was granted.
Pure was established in 2015 and is backed by funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management. The London-based company currently has more than 1GW of IT capacity in operation or development.
