A 25MW solar farm backed by Google and AirTrunk in New South Wales, Australia, is set to be connected to the grid.
The Mulwala Solar Farm, located in Riverina, is tied to a long-term corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) originally signed in 2023. The project will deliver power to Australia’s National Electricity Market, with the environmental credits generated by the solar farm supplied to the two data center operators. The project is being developed by the Australian renewable firm, European Energy Australia.
“Australia has ambitious energy goals, and we want to ensure the growth of the nation’s digital economy directly accelerates the transition to a cleaner grid,” said Bikash Koley, vice president, global infrastructure, Google. “As part of Google’s Digital Future Initiative in Australia, Mulwala Solar Farm is an example of how AI and digital infrastructure can be built the right way, with clear community benefits. By partnering with the right local and international experts, we’re proving that the technology of tomorrow can be powered responsibly today.”
According to Google, the plant is expected to support its 24/7 matching goal, which aims to ensure all of its data center operations are powered via clean energy around the clock.
The companies claim that the initiative will form a blueprint for how the tech sector can partner with renewable energy developers to support the development of new projects.
Damien Spillane, chief customer and innovation officer, AirTrunk, added: “We believe hyperscale data centers can help accelerate Australia’s energy transition by supporting investment in new renewable energy and strengthening long-term energy security. This collaboration shows how the industry can work together to bring more renewable energy online while creating lasting benefits for local communities.”
Google currently operates two cloud regions in Australia, with its first located in Sydney, launched in 2017, and its second in Melbourne, launched in 2021.
AirTrunk has data center campuses in operation and development in Sydney (x3) and Melbourne (x2) in Australia. Last month, the company energized a rooftop solar array at its SYD1 data center in Western Sydney, Australia.
