EdgeConneX is planning a gigawatt-scale data center campus in Sweden.

The company this week announced plans to expand in Sweden with the acquisition of land in Skellefteå, a city in Västerbotten County on the country’s northeast coast. This would be EdgeConneX’s first development in Sweden.

The site will be acquired from Lyten, a company that specializes in lithium-sulfur batteries and energy storage. Terms were not shared.

The company said the site could support up to 1GW of capacity. Full details of the development haven’t been shared.

“Sweden represents an attractive long‑term market for digital infrastructure investment. The country’s access to renewable energy, stable power grid, technical workforce, and strong sustainability framework align with our long‑term approach to infrastructure development,” said Dick Theunissen, managing director for EMEA, EdgeConneX. “As with all our projects, sustainability considerations will inform our planning and engagement as the project advances, alongside our focus on supporting the evolving needs of AI and cloud customers.”

Lyten this week announced it had completed the acquisition of Northvolt Ett, Ett Expansion, and Northvolt Labs, taking over more than 160 hectares of land in Skellefteå and Västerås. Founded in 2015 by two former Tesla executives, Northvolt AB filed for bankruptcy in Sweden in March 2025. Northvolt launched its manufacturing plant in Skellefteå in 2021.

Lyten also announced plans for the Lyten Industrial Hub in Skellefteå. The site will utilize the infrastructure built by Northvolt and access to abundant, clean hydro power to co-locate battery manufacturing with AI data centers and other industrial operations with EdgeConneX as the first named customer. Lyten plans to utilize its batteries and energy storage systems within the hub.

Lars Herlitz, Lyten chairman and co-founder, said: “We fully grasp the potential of these assets and the importance of creating high quality jobs and economic growth in Sweden. Batteries are now a critical part of securing energy independence and supporting the competitiveness of European industries ranging from automotive to aerospace to data centers to grid resiliency. We are bringing the best of Silicon Valley innovation together with Sweden’s engineering and manufacturing expertise to ensure this development is a success.”

Founded in 2009, EQT-owned EdgeConneX has a global footprint of 80 data centers in operation or development across more than 50 markets across North America, Europe, APAC, and South America. The company was initially focused on smaller-scale data centers in the US, but has gradually expanded its scope and geography, moving into build-to-suit and hyperscale facilities.

Eirik Dahle Benzon, managing director, EQT, said: “EQT is proud to support EdgeConneX’s entry into Sweden – EQT’s home market. Over time, we believe the data center site in Skellefteå can help advance Sweden’s digital competitiveness and contribute to positioning the country at the forefront of AI development in Europe.”

Currently, EdgeConneX’s European footprint spans Ireland, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, and Spain.

The company is known to be targeting a development in Finland, exploring developing a 240-acre campus in the Molandsmoen industrial area of Fyresdal that could offer 140MW across six buildings.

In Germany, EdgeConneX is known to be targeting a 120MW gas-powered campus outside Frankfurt in Maintal. Online listings also suggest the company is targeting other Frankfurt developments around Dietzenbach and Heusenstamm.

“We welcome EdgeConneX, a global player whose investment strengthens Skellefteå as a hub for innovation and digital development. We look forward to working together to support progress that benefits both the local community and the broader societal transformation,” said Kristina Sundin Jonsson, head of administration, Skellefteå Municipality.
