Data center developer EdgeMode has secured firm power supply for its planned AI data center platform in Spain.
The platform, which is being developed as part of a joint venture with Blackberry Alternative Investment Fund (BAIF), comprises five campus-style data center projects, each designed for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, with a combined capacity of more than 1.5GW.
“Securing power across the full pipeline is a critical milestone for EdgeMode and a clear inflection point for our platform,” said Charlie Faulkner, CEO of EdgeMode. “Power availability is the primary constraint facing AI infrastructure today, and this achievement allows us to move client and partner discussions from future capacity to deliverable, scalable solutions. With the core fundamentals now aligned, we are well-positioned to accelerate commercial engagement and advance commitments across the platform.”
In addition to the secured power supply, the sites have also secured land rights, dark fiber connectivity, and construction permits.
The platform was first announced in July, following the merger between EdgeMode and BAIF. The deal saw EdgeMode acquire 100 percent of BAIF, giving BAIF stakeholders 50 percent of EdgeMode’s outstanding equity.
BAIF’s assets include 23 data center development sites potentially totaling 4.41GW of capacity, of which more than 2.2GW have reportedly secured land leases, zoning approvals, and dark fiber access.
Blackberry AIF has previously announced plans for multiple developments in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain. Through its IberData Hub portfolio, the company aims to develop a 120MW data center in Córdoba, Andalusia; 100MW facilities in Vianos and Alcaraz, Albacete; and a 100MW facility in Toledo.
The company has also previously announced plans for several smaller facilities: Hormigos, 5MW; Alberche, 18MW; Cuerva, 5MW; Ardosa, 6MW; Lobera, 14MW; Las Camaña, 10MW; and Las Valeras, 9MW.
Following this in October, the companies announced that they would integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems across planned data center sites in Spain. In addition, the companies plan to acquire two additional solar assets to power the facilities.
EdgeMode is a former cryptocurrency mining firm, but has since pivoted to targeting colocation services and high-performance computing hosting.
The company recently acquired Synthesis Analytics Production, giving it a 95MW power purchase agreement and a long-term lease on an in-development 20MW high-performance computing immersion-cooled data center in Marviken, Sweden, alongside freehold ownership of approximately 20,000 sqm (215,280 sq ft) of adjacent land.
