Google has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with French energy firm TotalEnergies for power from a solar farm in Williams County, Ohio.
Under the terms of the PPA, Total will supply Google with 1.5TWh of power from the 49MW Montpelier solar farm, which is expected to reach operational status by the end of the year. The project is connected to the PJM Interconnection grid, with the energy generated expected to serve Google’s data center operations across Ohio.
“We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Google with this agreement to supply renewable electricity to their data centers in Ohio,” said Stéphane Michel, president of Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies. “This agreement illustrates TotalEnergies’s ability to meet the growing energy demands of major tech companies by leveraging its integrated portfolio of renewable and flexible assets. It also contributes to achieving our target of 12 percent profitability in the power sector.”
The PPA follows Google’s June 2024 announcement that it would invest an additional $2.3 billion in its three data center campuses in Central Ohio. The company currently has operational data centers in New Albany and Lancaster and is constructing another in Columbus. In June, the company announced that it had acquired nearly 85 acres of land outside Columbus, Ohio, for a potential data center development.
“Strengthening the grid by deploying more reliable and clean energy is crucial for supporting the digital infrastructure that businesses and individuals depend on,” said Will Conkling, director of Clean Energy and Power, Google. “Our collaboration with TotalEnergies will help power our data centers and the broader economic growth of Ohio.”
Google has signed several agreements with energy companies to power its data centers in Ohio. In 2023, it signed a PPA with EDPR to procure power from more than 80 solar projects across the US. The first solar projects will begin development in Ohio and will be used to power Google’s data centers in the state.
Total has targeted the US market as a key growth area over recent years, committing to deploy a 10GW portfolio in the country, with 1GW in the PJM market.
The company has already signed several PPAs with data center and telco firms. Earlier this month, the company signed a ten-year 30MW renewable energy supply contract with European data center firm Data4. The company has also signed PPAs with STMicroelectronics, Amazon, Microsoft, BT, and Orange over the past few years.
