A data center could be developed in Guyana.
According to News Room Guyana, President Irfaan Ali announced that a proposal for the construction of a data center had been submitted. The facility would be located at a housing development called Wales, which is situated on the west bank of the Demerara river.
The President also said that the region would “have the first data center working with academics and research institutions on data analytics, artificial intelligence development, and translational science.”
Details about the proposed development are sparse. The potential capacity, size, and developer of the data center are unknown.
The announcement was made by President Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of the De Kinderen Regional Hospital in the capital, Georgetown.
A 300MW power plant is also being constructed in Wales that will use natural gas from the Stabroek Block, which ExxonMobil Guyana’s president, Alistair Routeledge, has said could be used to power data centers.
According to Data Center Map and Baxtel, Guyana currently contains no data centers. The government announced in April that it had plans to establish an AI data center in the region of Berbice, New Amsterdam, but details about the size and capacity of the facility are sparse.
Guyana’s subsea network is based in Georgetown, which has cable landing stations for the X-Link cable, Deep Blue One, and the Suriname Guyana Submarine Cable System.
