Xavveo a Berlin-based startup founded by industry veterans and former founders of Sicoya, Dr. Sven Otte and Dr. Stefan Meister, alongside Intel veteran Dr. Ulrich Keil secures €7.9 million aiming to redefine safety and reliability in autonomous driving through its pioneering photonic distributed radar system.
This latest funding infusion will fuel the development of Xavveo’s advanced distributed Photonic Radar, grow its engineering team, and enable strategic partnerships with key players in the automotive and technology sectors. Xavveo’s radar system presents a breakthrough solution in the autonomous vehicle industry, where the limitations of traditional sensors, such as LIDAR and vision-based technologies, have held back full-scale deployment.
A technological breakthrough for safer roads
The core of Xavveo’s innovation lies in its Photonic Radar, which leverages Silicon Photonics to create a distributed radar system around the vehicle, providing LIDAR-level angular resolution of less than 0.1 degrees. Designed to operate reliably in challenging conditions, including fog and heavy rain, this system enhances obstacle detection and navigation, making autonomous vehicles significantly safer and more reliable. By addressing the limitations of current sensor technology, Xavveo is positioning itself as a crucial partner for automakers seeking to boost their competitive edge through superior safety and performance.
“Autonomous vehicles (AVs) represent one of the most complex engineering challenges of our time,” said Dr. Sven Otte, CEO of Xavveo. “Once fully deployed, AVs will democratize mobility and significantly reduce carbon emissions. We are thrilled to have Vsquared and imec.xpand, two funds with a lot of expertise in the deep tech sphere, on board.”
Seasoned leadership driving innovation
The team behind Xavveo brings together a wealth of expertise in Silicon Photonics and autonomous systems. Founders Dr. Sven Otte and Dr. Stefan Meister, previously of Sicoya, are leading figures in the field of silicon-based photonic solutions. Adding to the team’s strength is Dr. Ulrich Keil from Intel, whose experience in cutting-edge hardware and software for autonomous systems further solidifies Xavveo’s position as an industry leader in sensor technology.
Michael Jobst, Director Principal at Vsquared Ventures, voiced strong support for Xavveo’s vision, stating: “Their distributed photonic radar system is set to become a critical enabler of the future of mobility, and we believe they have the talent and vision to bring this to the forefront of the industry.”
Imec.xpand Principal Jonathan Fajardo Cortes echoed this enthusiasm: “Xavveo’s technology represents a monumental leap forward for autonomous vehicle perception, and we’re excited to support them as they scale this innovation. The combination of an exceptional team and groundbreaking technology is precisely what we look for in our investments.”
A $26 billion market opportunity across sectors
Xavveo’s Photonic Radar system not only aims to impact the autonomous vehicle market but also holds significant potential in adjacent fields such as industrial automation, defence, consumer electronics, and medical technology. Collectively, these sectors represent a combined market opportunity valued at $26 billion, which is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
With its visionary approach to sensor technology and strong backing from deep-tech investors, Xavveo is set to be a driving force in the advancement of autonomous driving. The company’s proprietary radar system is positioned to make autonomous vehicles safer, more reliable, and ready for real-world conditions—a critical step toward realizing a future where autonomous driving is a safe and accessible reality.
