atNorth has signed a deal with Swedish heat recovery firm Calentix to deploy heat reuse technology at atNorth’s up to 300MW SWE04 data center in SollefteĆ„, Sweden.

The companies signed a project development agreement, under which Calentix will lead the development of a potential heat recovery solution to feed the nearby LƄngsele district heating network. Swedish utility Adven operates the heat network.

In the first phase of the project, heat recovery is expected to total 1.6MW with the potential to expand to ~20MW. The project will require between 2km (1.2 miles) and 10km (6.2 miles) of new pipelines to link with the district heating network. The companies said that they target the first delivery of heat in Q2 of 2029.

As part of the agreement, atNorth will provide access to the surplus heat from SWE04, together with site integration and the necessary infrastructure interfaces. The companies have already completed an early feasibility study exploring the project’s potential, which confirmed that heat recovery is technically feasible and that there is local interest in exploring the opportunity further.

Following the studies, the partners said that the focus is now on determining whether the project can become technically and commercially viable, including technical design, site planning, commercial principles, and the agreements needed between the different parties.

The companies said the core challenge will be finding a solution that creates value for both sides. Calentix will lead the project’s development and financing, with atNorth making the surplus heat available for dispatch to the local heating network.

The partners said that this will allow ā€œeach partner to focus on what they do best, while creating a practical way for the heat to be used within the local energy system and demonstrating how collaboration between specialist partners can make a difference.ā€

The companies are targeting to sign a heat purchase agreement in 2027. Following this, the partners said they will make a final investment decision.

atNorth announced plans for its SWE04 data center in February. Located at Hamre Industrial Park in LƄngsele, the new SWE04 site will be developed on a 50-hectare plot. The site will support direct liquid cooling. The company said the site will be able to support densities up to 1MW per rack.

The company currently operates one facility in Sweden. SWE01 is located in Kista, a suburb of Stockholm. Launched in 2022, it offers 12MW of capacity across 6,400 sqm (68,890 sq ft). The site is home to Swedish cloud provider 6G AI Sweden and AlphaTon Capital Corp.

A second facility in Stockholm, known as SWE02, is in development. Announced last month and set to be located close to SWE01, the new facility will offer 30MW and is due to go live in Q4 2027.

The company has signed several heat reuse agreements in recent years. Most recently, in August, the company partnered with sustainable infrastructure firm Selected Group on a heat reuse project at its DEN02 data center campus in Ƙlgod, Denmark.
