Stockholm-based AI startup Pixel Systems has raised $3.1 million in a seed round led by Unconventional Ventures, at a pre-money valuation of approximately $21 million. The company develops digital forensics technology to detect AI-generated and manipulated digital content. Its platform combines proprietary forensic analysis methods with external verification technologies, enabling businesses to assess the authenticity of images, documents, receipts and other digital material through a single API. The funding will be used to expand its commercial team, scale sales and partnerships, further develop its technology and prepare for international market expansion. Pixel also reports reaching $100,000 in contracted recurring revenue within 21 days of its commercial launch.
Pixel Systems develops verification technology for businesses that rely on digital material when making financial and operational decisions. The rapid development of generative AI has made it easier to produce convincing fake images, documents and other forms of digital evidence, creating challenges for companies that need to verify customer-submitted information.
“Generative AI has made it extremely cheap to fabricate evidence. The problem is that almost every digital process still rests on the assumption that what people submit is authentic. That assumption is disappearing,” says Robel Efrem, co-founder and CEO of Pixel.
Pixel’s platform combines its proprietary digital forensics technology with external verification methods, making different detection techniques accessible through a single API. The system is designed to identify manipulated or AI-generated content even when it does not contain a watermark or other identifying information from the AI model used to create it.
“The internet was built for a world where an image could largely be treated as proof. That world no longer exists. Now every company that receives images, receipts, and documents from its customers needs to be able to check that material before money is paid out,” says Robel Efrem.
The company targets sectors including insurance, fintech, e-commerce and professional services. Potential applications include identifying altered damage photographs in insurance claims, fabricated receipts and invoices, manipulated product images in refund requests, and falsified material used in financial or legal processes.
Pixel says its internal tests have achieved a 99.98% detection rate for AI-generated and manipulated material. This figure is based on the company’s own testing rather than independently verified results.
The $3.1 million seed round was led by Unconventional Ventures, which focuses on investing in technology companies addressing structural challenges and opportunities. The investment comes only months after Pixel Systems was founded and follows the company’s initial commercial launch.
Pixel reports that it reached $100,000 in contracted recurring revenue within 21 days of launching commercially, indicating early demand for digital content verification among businesses.
“What has surprised us most is not how fast AI technology is developing, but how quickly the problem has already become commercial. Companies need to solve this now, not in three years,” says Philip Skogsberg, CPO.
The company plans to allocate the new capital towards expanding its commercial organisation, increasing sales and partnership activities, and continuing development of its verification technology. It will also use the funding to prepare for expansion into international markets.
“We believe the ability to verify digital information will become as natural a part of tomorrow’s infrastructure as cybersecurity is today. That a Swedish company has the opportunity to take a leading position in this field is exactly the kind of development we want to help make possible,” says Nora Bavey, General Partner at Unconventional Ventures.
