A Spanish engineering firm is planning a large-scale off-grid data center facility in Zaragoza.
Aragón-based Krolmap is planning a 225MW data center campus in Belchite that will reportedly feature a self-consumption energy model to reduce its dependence on the power grid.
The initiative, valued at €1.5 billion ($1.68bn), aims to integrate renewable generation, storage, and cogeneration to meet continuous demand.
The complex would be located in the La Legua industrial park in Belchite and would occupy an area of 25 hectares. According to information published by Heraldo de Aragón, the design includes six independent buildings and an on-site energy system to power the facilities.
The initiative is currently in the planning phase, so not all the details needed to assess its final architecture or development timeline have been released yet.
This project runs parallel to another project in Aragón that the company is currently planning in Villanueva de Gaállego.
The proposal addresses one of the main constraints on the development of large data centers in Spain: the availability of electrical power. In areas with limited access to the grid, having on-site generation could offer an alternative solution, although it would shift the responsibility to the developer to size and operate an energy system capable of sustaining critical loads.
Renewable generation and battery storage would provide electricity for the campus, although the published information does not specify the technologies installed or their capacity.
