Finland has overtaken Sweden in the combined value of its unicorns, with six privately valued billion-dollar companies worth $34.5 billion, according to the first Hurun Nordic Unicorn Index. Across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland, the report counts 18 unicorns worth $76.1 billion, led by Stockholm-based AI startup Lovable at $13.3 billion.
Finland has emerged as the Nordic region’s most valuable unicorn ecosystem by total company valuation, driven by satellite technology, health wearables and quantum computing. The country’s six unicorns are valued at a combined $34.5 billion, ahead of Sweden’s five companies worth $28.3 billion, according to the Hurun Research Institute’s report published on 20 October 2026.
The index brings together Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland as a single startup ecosystem for the first time. Together, the five countries account for 18 unicorns — privately held companies valued at $1 billion or more — with a combined valuation of $76.1 billion.
Although Finland leads in aggregate value, Sweden is home to the region’s most valuable unicorn. Lovable, an AI-powered platform that enables users to build software by describing what they want in natural language, reached a $13.3 billion valuation following a $400 million Series C round in August 2026. Founded in Stockholm in 2023 by Anton Osika and Fabian Hedin, the company has risen to the top of the Nordic rankings in less than three years.
Finnish deep tech drives the country’s lead
Finland’s ranking reflects the growing value of companies working in strategically important technology sectors.
Espoo-based Iceye, which develops synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites capable of capturing images of the Earth through clouds and darkness, is valued at $12 billion. Its valuation increased by $9.2 billion in 2026, making it the index’s fastest-rising company by value. The company raised a $520 million Series F round in June, led by General Atlantic.
Oura, the Oulu-founded health technology company behind a smart ring that tracks sleep, activity and other health metrics, is valued at $11 billion. The company has expanded beyond 5.5 million ring owners and filed a confidential draft registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in May 2026, according to the report.
Other Finnish unicorns include Helsinki-based supply-chain software provider RELEX Solutions, valued at $5.7 billion, and cloud data platform Aiven, valued at $3 billion. Quantum computing company IQM, based in Espoo, is valued at $1.8 billion. It began trading on Nasdaq in July 2026 and is also listed in the report’s graduate-company category.
Mobile phone company HMD Global, also based in Espoo, completes Finland’s six-company group at a valuation of $1 billion.
The report identifies Aalto University as the region’s most productive founder institution, with ten founders across four companies: Iceye, RELEX Solutions, IQM and Aiven. The finding highlights the role of Finland’s research and engineering talent in building companies with international reach.
Nordic startups reach $76.1 billion in value
Beyond Finland and Sweden, Denmark has three unicorns valued at a combined $8.6 billion, while Norway has four worth $4.7 billion. Iceland has no active unicorns in the index, although the report points to wound-care company Kerecis, acquired by Coloplast for up to $1.3 billion, as an example of the country’s ability to produce valuable technology businesses.
Stockholm remains the region’s leading unicorn city, with five companies worth $28.3 billion. Its roster includes Lovable, legal AI startup Legora, preventive healthcare company Neko Health, music licensing business Epidemic Sound and digital healthcare provider KRY.
The ten most valuable companies account for $66.3 billion, or 87% of the total Nordic unicorn valuation. Collectively, the 18 companies employ more than 15,000 people directly, with RELEX Solutions, Flatpay, Iceye and Oura among the largest private employers.
Measured as a single market, the Nordics would rank eighth globally by unicorn count, ahead of Israel, according to Hurun. The region has 0.65 unicorns per million people, compared with 0.45 in Germany and 0.50 in France.
Established technology companies dwarf the current unicorn generation
The report also tracks companies that have moved beyond private unicorn status through public listings or acquisitions. These 22 Nordic technology companies have a combined estimated value of approximately $225 billion — nearly three times the value of the current unicorn cohort.
The group includes Spotify, valued at $105 billion, as well as Unity, Evolution, Ascendis Pharma, Supercell, Zendesk, Skype and Wolt. Their scale illustrates the potential long-term economic impact of companies that emerge from the region’s startup ecosystem.
However, the report raises questions about whether the Nordics can retain the companies they create as they expand. Industrial data company Cognite, founded in Norway, moved its headquarters to the United States before agreeing to a $3.1 billion acquisition by France’s Schneider Electric in June 2026. Legal AI startup Legora has also moved its headquarters from Stockholm to New York.
The report argues that access to growth capital, stock-option policies and local public markets will influence whether future Nordic technology leaders remain anchored in the region.
Despite these challenges, the latest rankings point to a shift in the Nordic startup landscape. Alongside established software and fintech businesses, a growing share of the region’s private-company value is concentrated in artificial intelligence, healthcare, satellites and quantum computing — sectors with applications extending well beyond the Nordic domestic markets.
For Finland, the findings reinforce its position as a source of globally competitive technology companies, with its lead in combined unicorn value built on businesses spanning space, healthcare, enterprise software and quantum technology.
