Quantum startup ZuriQ partners with Infineon for development of scalable quantum chips

Swiss quantum hardware startup ZuriQ has collaborated with Infineon Technologies to advance the development of scalable quantum chips.

The partnership will see Infineon combine its expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging, and integrated photonics with ZuriQ’s trapped-ion quantum computing architecture in an effort to target the next generation of trapped-ion quantum computing.

Quantum of promise: How to build a quantum chip

Inside the complex world of quantum processor manufacturing

In a statement, the duo said they had previously demonstrated the feasibility of this architecture by trapping a 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ions – the largest two-dimensional array of its kind to date – and are now focused on scaling the technology to significantly larger qubit counts, for use in commercial quantum systems.

“Advancing quantum computing toward commercial impact will require close collaboration between quantum innovators and industrial technology leaders,” said Pavel Hrmo, co-founder and CEO of ZuriQ. “Through our collaboration with Infineon, which possesses a deep understanding of process development and semiconductor technologies, we are turning ZuriQ’s technological progress into scalable, manufacturable quantum hardware. This partnership brings us closer to developing quantum computing technologies for real-world applications.”

Clemens Rössler, senior director and head of quantum processing units at Infineon, added: “Progress in quantum computing requires breakthroughs in physics, but also robust manufacturing technologies capable of supporting the development of future large-scale systems. With our expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, integration, and advanced packaging, we are enabling the next generation of trapped-ion quantum processing units. By combining our semiconductor competence with ZuriQ’s design and architecture expertise, we are taking an important step toward industrializing this key technology.”

Founded in 2024 by Hrmo, Tobias Sägesser, and Dr. Shreyans Jain, ZuriQ was spun out of ETH Zurich University and is developing technology to overcome the scaling challenges associated with trapped-ion quantum computers.

By using a micro-fabricated chip with many electrodes that hold static voltages embedded in a large and homogeneous static magnetic field, ZuriQ says it is changing how ions are trapped. The company’s approach allows ions to move in all spatial directions, reducing bottlenecks in information flow that form on the trap chip.

The startup also claims that unlike other quantum computing companies currently operating in the market, it has “redesigned the fundamental computational building block from the ground up,” enabling a much steeper rate of growth in computing power.

In January 2025, ZuriQ raised $4.2 million in a seed funding round led by Founderful, with participation from SquareOne, First Momentum Ventures, OnSight Ventures, and QAI Ventures.
