French energy firm Haffner Energy has launched a modular, biomass-based power-and-cooling offering for the data center sector.

The new offering is built on its CORE100 platform and a new multi-module variant called C-iB. The firm said the system is designed to deliver local, decarbonized power with guaranteed availability, while supplying cooling services and reducing on-site water usage.

The company claims that the solution can scale into the tens of megawatts and beyond, and is intended to let data centers add computing capacity without waiting on grid upgrades. The system runs alongside the existing grid connection rather than replacing it, cutting the volume of power a facility needs to draw from the grid.

The solution is powered by residual biomass, which Haffner said can be stored on-site or nearby for several weeks. Haffner claims that the technology is compatible with multiple biomass feedstocks, including forestry and agricultural residues, allowing individual projects to diversify supply.

The offerings will be supplied as part of a ten-module configuration, including two redundant modules and limited natural gas backup. According to the company, the C-iB module is purpose-built for multi-module installations. The process also co-produces biochar, which the company said creates a route to biogenic carbon removal.

“A single project can call for more than ten modules, with each module integrated into a full-service data center offering generating about €6m ($6.98m) in revenue – nearly three times what a module used solely for syngas production would bring in,” Philippe Haffner, chairman and CEO of Haffner Energy, said. “That additional revenue doesn’t require a proportional increase in our industrial capacity, since some of the complementary equipment is supplied by specialized partners.”

Headquartered in Vitry-le-François, France, the company is a founding member of ÆTHER, a European consortium bidding for the European Commission’s “AI Gigafactory” tender, with plans for an AI gigafactory in the Strasbourg region of France.
