The Barmherzige Brüder Trier hospital group (BBT Group) has announced the opening of a new data center at Caritas Hospital in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The 78kW facility in the town of Bad Mergentheim is designed to support the digital requirements of Caritas and other hospitals and elderly care facilities in the region, and their adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The total cost of construction was €3.6 million ($4.1m) according to Data Center Group. DCD has approached the organization for comment.
“With today’s commissioning of the new data center, you are setting an important milestone for the future of your institution,” Manuela Zahn, Bad Mergentheim’s first deputy mayor, told Caritas Hospital staff at the data center’s opening ceremony. “A data center like this is more than just a technical building. It is the digital heart of modern medical facilities.”
Construction of the data center began in October 2025. Spanning 147 sqm (1,580 sq ft) and built according to modular construction techniques, the facility was designed with space for ten racks, with room to expand its IT compute capacity to 220kW should it be required in the future.
The cooling system is an extension of the hospital’s network, while an emergency power supply for the facility is provided by diesel generators. The data center is also capable of supporting the deployment of AI healthcare initiatives, though BBT Group did not specify what kinds of applications these would be.
Headquartered in Koblenz in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, BBT Group is a Christian hospital operator and one of Germany’s largest healthcare groups. Its construction of a data center in Baden-Württemberg adds to a small but growing market of 32 such facilities in the state, according to DataCenters.com.
Other projects in development include a 707MW data center proposed by the Wirth Group in Philippsburg and a supercomputer facility with a peak performance of 48.1 petaflops at the University of Stuttgart.
Learn more about the data center market in Switzerland and the wider DACH region, and meet with other executives and experts at the DCN Zurich event later this year.
