Nordic energy firm Helios is planning to develop a data center in Finnish Lapland.

The municipality of Tervola recently announced that Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy is submitting a zoning request to the municipality for a data center in the Koivu area.

Full details of the planned project haven’t been shared, but the site would total around 860 hectares.

Tervola is a municipality in the northern province of Lapland. The project would be located in the Koivu area, approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from the Tervola municipal center.

Helios has submitted its application via the Helios 1 Cranberry Oy affiliate.

“Finland’s strengths for locating data centers are a safe and predictable operating environment, a reliable electricity grid, a cool climate, and high-quality telecommunications connections. Finland has an excellent opportunity to become a leader in the industry. The need for data centers is now growing significantly, and in the current global situation, it is in the interest of all of us internet users that information about us can be processed securely on servers located in Finland,” said Jenny Hölttä, project developer at Helios.

Founded in 2019, Helios Nordic Energy has more than 100 solar projects in operation and development across the Nordics. The company has been owned by VINCI Group since 2024.

Tervola is the third data center project the company has announced.

The company recently announced plans for a 500MW project in Lapinlahti in central Finland.

The firm is also planning a data center in ​​Iisalmi, a town and municipality some 26km north of Lappeenranta.

Tervola Mayor Mika Simoska added: “Tervola has established itself as a bio-municipality in Lapland, where renewable energy is produced and utilized. It is great that Helios has initiated the planning of a data center project for our municipality. This way, renewable energy produced in Tervola and the surrounding area can be utilized locally. The project is a positive boost to the regional economy, bringing diverse growth effects.”
