Why did we rebuild NORDEEP from the ground up for our 5th Anniversary?

Deep tech commercialization has a structural problem: the people who develop breakthrough technologies, the companies that need those technologies, and the investors willing to finance them often operate in separate worlds.

For the 5th anniversary edition of NORDEEP, taking place on September 16–17 at Dipoli in Espoo, the organizers are attempting to address that problem by redesigning the event around a single question: what would happen if deep-tech networking were built around actual market demand, investment criteria and technology readiness rather than traditional pitching and networking?

The answer is what NORDEEP describes as the Unified NORDEEP 2026 Market Architecture—a new event structure designed to connect technology supply, industrial demand and capital within the same physical and digital environment.

With 1,500 international visitors expected, the new architecture introduces four interconnected concepts intended to move participants from discovery to commercial conversations more efficiently.

Putting Market Demand on the Main Stage

One of the most significant changes is the Corporate Innovation Arena (CIA).

Instead of startups being the only participants expected to take the stage and pitch their solutions, the format reverses the traditional relationship between technology providers and potential customers.

Corporate, industrial and public-sector organizations will present their active technical challenges, operational bottlenecks and piloting needs directly to the deep-tech ecosystem.

The idea is straightforward: rather than asking startups to pitch a solution and hope that someone in the room needs it, the market itself communicates what problems need solving.

For deep-tech companies, where development cycles can be long and technologies highly specialized, that distinction can be significant. A clearly defined industrial problem can provide a more concrete starting point for a pilot, partnership or commercial deployment than a conventional networking conversation.

Investors Explain What They Actually Fund

The second element of the architecture focuses on another major source of friction for deep-tech companies: understanding whether an investor is genuinely relevant before entering the fundraising process.

NORDEEP’s new “What We Fund” (WWF) format puts active international deep-tech VCs on stage for five-minute mandate briefings.

Rather than broad statements about supporting innovation, investors are expected to outline their investment theses, ticket sizes, geographic preferences and scientific or IP requirements.

For founders, the objective is to replace some of the guesswork surrounding investor discovery.

Deep tech fundraising often requires a more specialized understanding of scientific evidence, intellectual property, technological maturity and commercialization timelines. Knowing exactly what an investor is looking for can therefore be as important as knowing how much capital they have available.

WWF is designed to make those parameters visible before founders spend time pursuing a conversation that may not be a fit.

Making Technology Supply Visible

The third component is the Global Deep Tech Showcase & Discovery Zone, which puts validated scientific ventures in front of the wider ecosystem through physical demonstrations and short, three-minute presentations on the main stage.

The emphasis is on making technology tangible.

For deep-tech ventures, this can be particularly important. A technology that is difficult to explain through a conventional pitch deck may become considerably easier to understand when participants can see a prototype, demonstration or working application.

The Discovery Zone therefore functions as the technology-supply side of the marketplace, bringing companies and their technologies into the same environment where industrial challenges and investment mandates are being presented.

From Networking to an Execution Engine

The fourth element is intended to connect the previous three.

NORDEEP’s Live Opportunity Wall and SiRA™ feed are designed to continuously synchronize signals from the technology, corporate-demand and investment sides of the ecosystem.

Participants’ opportunities and requirements are displayed throughout the venue and integrated into the digital SiRA™ environment. The system then cross-references these parameters with participants’ completed assessment profiles.

The goal is to identify potential matches while people are physically together at the event.

In other words, the architecture is designed around a simple progression:

  • Demand identifies a problem.
  • Capital identifies what it will fund.
  • Technology demonstrates what is possible.
  • The matching system brings relevant parties together.

That is a different proposition from simply creating more opportunities for attendees to exchange business cards.

Why Deep Tech Needs a Different Marketplace

The thinking behind the redesign reflects a broader challenge facing deep-tech ecosystems.

A software startup can sometimes demonstrate a product, acquire early users and iterate rapidly. Deep-tech ventures can face fundamentally different commercialization barriers: laboratory validation, specialized infrastructure, regulatory requirements, industrial integration, intellectual property considerations and long development cycles.

As a result, the path from scientific breakthrough to commercial product often requires several different actors to become aligned at the same time.

A promising technology needs an industrial application. The industrial partner needs a sufficiently mature technology. The startup needs capital to reach the next stage. Investors need evidence that the technology can ultimately become a scalable business.

When these pieces remain disconnected, commercialization slows down.

NORDEEP’s 2026 model attempts to address that fragmentation by bringing the three sides of the equation—technology supply, market demand and capital availability—into one coordinated marketplace.

A Marketplace Rather Than Another Conference

That is ultimately the central idea behind NORDEEP’s 5th-anniversary redesign.

The event is positioning itself less as a conventional conference where participants listen to presentations and more as a high-efficiency marketplace for deep tech.

The distinction matters.

Instead of asking participants simply to attend, network and discover opportunities, the new architecture is designed to make those opportunities more explicit: Which companies have a technology ready for collaboration? Which industrial organizations have an active problem? Which investors are currently deploying capital, and what exactly are they looking for?

If the model works as intended, participants should spend less time searching for the right conversation and more time having it.

For an ecosystem where commercialization can take years and where the cost of finding the right industrial, financial or technological partner can be high, that efficiency may be one of the most valuable resources an event can provide.

NORDEEP’s 5th anniversary edition will put that model to the test in Espoo this September.
