Stellantis, the automotive company listed on Paris, NYSE and Milan, will sell car sharing Free2move to Frankfurt-listed investment holding Mutares. The closing shlould take place by the end of 2026 (vendor press release and buyer press release).
Free2move operates one of the most geographically diverse car-sharing platforms, with fleets in 14 cities across Europe and the United States.
After the sale of the free-floating car sharing assets, Free2move will continue to operate as Stellantis’ mobility platform, offering services such as car hire, leasing, subscriptions, fleet management and a mobility marketplace.
As an independent entity under Mutares, Free2move’s car-sharing business will benefit from greater agility, dedicated investment and increased operational flexibility, enabling it to pursue growth in a competitive mobility market.
Mutares is launching a new platform in the mobility sector out of the carve-out of Free2move car sharing activities. Its plans include a revamped approach to international fleet management, the ongoing transition to battery-electric vehicles, and a renewed focus on the customer experience and the urban mobility needs of local authorities.
Virgilio Cerutti, Stellantis head of sales and business development, commented: “We are strengthening our ability to deliver long-term performance through the focus on the automotive sector core activities. We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to support a smooth transition for our customers, partners and employees.”
Johannes Laumann, Mutares cio, added: “Free2move’s car-sharing business relies on a strong international brand awareness with clear potential for operational improvement following the planned separation from Stellantis. We look forward to strengthening Free2move’s operating model and further developing the company into a leading independent platform in the mobility sector with the support of the management team.”
