Microsoft has expanded its landholdings in the Netherlands, acquiring additional land in Middenmeer, North Holland.

As reported by the Dutch publication NRC, Microsoft has purchased a 37.5-hectare (92.6-acre) plot of agricultural land near Middenmeer, North of Amsterdam.

The property was purchased for €44 million ($50m) in June, on land next to where Tennet is looking to establish a new substation, as per Land Registry data reviewed by the publication.

Microsoft told the publication that there are currently no plans for a data center on the property, but that “It would be nice if we could ever develop on it,” suggesting future intentions to do so.

A spokesperson for the Municipality of Hollands Kroon told NRC that the land is currently zoned as “agricultural – greenhouse horticulture,” and no current applications have been made to amend the zoning code.

Microsoft previously acquired 50 hectares of land in the area in September 2025. That land was located next to Microsoft’s AMS13/14 campus in the municipality of Hollands Kroon, Middenmeer, which is north of Amsterdam. The existing data center received construction permission in April 2023.

According to NRC, the original campus comprises two hyperscale facilities, while the company has since commissioned two new data halls and has plans to build another six.

Microsoft’s Dutch subsidiary Microsoft Datacenter Netherlands BV’s annual report states that up to mid-2025, the company had invested just less than €12.5bn ($14.21bn) in its data centers and cloud infrastructure.

European grid operator Tennet is currently working on a 380kV transmission line with two new substations in the region, one of which is set for land right next to Microsoft’s recent purchase.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, Microsoft is set to be a customer of PureDC’s Amsterdam facility currently under construction. Extinction Rebellion recently protested at the site by throwing water balloons filled with “hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, salt, and acrylic paint” onto the construction site.
