50MW ‘monstrosity’ data center proposed on green belt land in Bromley, UK

A 50MW data center could be built on green belt land in Bromley, UK.

The two-building campus would be constructed on a ten-hectare site between Cudham Lane North and Charmwood Lane, which is currently farmland. It is south of the A21 Sevenoaks Road just outside Bromley, a suburb of south-east London.

Data center consultancy Dare DC has made an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) screening opinion request to local authority Bromley Council, paving the way for a full planning application to be submitted. Councillors have asked for a detailed EIA on the development to be carried out before this happens.

Though an application has yet to be made, residents in the Bromley area have already expressed concerns about the scheme, with 300, mostly negative, comments submitted to the council, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

One reads: “The location is in no way appropriate for such a monstrosity.”

According to Dare DC, it hopes to power the data center via a grid connection which could be secured in 2028, though this timeline seems optimistic – a report released by consultancy Amber Energy last year found that the average wait time for a new data center grid connection in the UK was more than eight years.

According to its website, Dare DC specializes in data center planning projects, though little information is available about the firm. The site lists two projects, one in ‘Orpington’, which presumably refers to the scheme near Bromley, and a second known as the St Cleres DC.
