A data center could be built in Norfolk, UK.
First reported by the Norwich Evening News, Norwich Apex Ltd aims to develop a two-story building, substation, and a three-story office block on 13 hectares of land off Ipswich Road in Norwich.
Norwich Apex secured planning permission to develop the Apex Business Park in 2018 from South Norfolk Council, but the company has yet to break ground.
An application to pivot the site towards data center use hasn’t been filed yet, but is due to be in the coming weeks.
According to LinkedIn, Norwich Apex started life as the site for a proposed industrial business park. But once Orsted announced in 2024 that the 2.9GW Onshore Converter for the new Hornsea 3 offshore windfarm was to be located nearby, plans began to pivot the site.
Full details haven’t been shared, but plans are reportedly now underway for a 150MW data center.
Matt Bartram, managing director at Norwich Apex Ltd, told the Evening News: “We are delighted to bring forward these proposals for a modern, efficient and sustainable piece of digital infrastructure.
“Our goal is to create a facility that not only supports the UK’s growing demand for data and connectivity but also responds sensitively to its surroundings through careful design, landscaping and environmental consideration and helps to drive economic growth in the wider Norwich area.”
Executives at Norwich Apex also have ties to modular housebuilder Future-Built.
Norfolk, in the east of England, has a very small data center market. Norwich has two data centers, according to Data Center Map: one each from NorwichDC and FreeClix. The local county council also operates a facility in the area, as does the university hospital. Another facility is due to be built at the Norwich Research Park.
