Swedish data center operator EcoDataCenter has divested several facilities to a Finnish investment firm as part of a pivot to focus on larger-scale developments.

The company this week announced the sale of three of its data centers to CapMan Infra’s data center platform. The sale comprises two facilities in Stockholm and one in Piteå.

Term of the deal weren’t shared, but the transaction is expected to close in Q2 2025.

EcoDataCenter said the transaction is part of its long-term strategy to further focus its operations on the design, construction, and operation of large data center campuses. The facilities were “earmarked for divestment following a strategic review in order to further streamline their operations and focus on larger campus projects,” it added.

“This sale marks an important strategic milestone for EcoDataCenter, where we are now focusing on what we do best. Namely, designing, building, and operating large-scale data centers for AI and cloud services. We will continue to expand our business and strengthen our position to meet the growing demand for innovative data centers,” said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.

The data centers in Piteå and Stockholm were acquired in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The Piteå site was previously owned and operated by Fortlax.

The Piteå facility offers 4.5MW across 3,350 sqm (36,060 sq ft). The two sites in Stockholm offer a combined 4MW across 6,000 sqm (64585 sq ft).

EcoDataCenter was formed in 2015 as a joint venture between local energy company Falu Energi & Vatten and data center operator EcoDC AB and opened its first facility in Falun in 2019.

Nordic real estate investor and developer Areim took a majority stake in the firm via the Areim Fund III for around SEK 200 million ($22m) in 2018 and merged it with Swedish operator Fortlax in 2019. EcoDataCenter has been fully owned by the Areim DC Fund since 2023.

The company has data centers in operation and development in Falun, Östersund, and Borlänge.

Founded in 1989, Nasdaq-Helsinki-listed CapMan Infra invests in energy, transportation, and telecommunications infrastructure across the Nordics with a focus on sustainability. It has €6.1 billion ($6.93bn) in assets under management.

The CapMan Nordic Infrastructure II fund, established in 2022, made its final closing at more than €375 million ($500.4m) in April 2024.

The company’s existing Data Centre Platform, which comes from the Nordic Infrastructure II fund, is soon to be renamed to Kolo DC. The northern European-focused platform will comprise acquired facilities in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark.

“We are very pleased to take over these high-quality data centers and see great potential in the Swedish market. Through our growing data center platform, which will soon be launched under the name Kolo DC, we will continue to develop the facilities and actively contribute to meeting the rapidly growing demand for data center capacity and sustainable infrastructure solutions in the Nordic region,” added Harri Halonen, partner at CapMan Infra.

In May 2023, CapMan acquired Dutch IT services provider Serverius and announced plans to build a new European data center platform. Founded in 2008, Serverius operates three colocation data centers in the Netherlands with a combined capacity of 8MW.

In September 2023, CapMan acquired Danish data center colocation firm Fuzion. Established in 2001, Fuzion offers colocation services, operating out of four data centers in the Jutland region of Denmark in Skanderborg, Viby J., Aarhus, and Randers. The company is also expanding to a new location in Copenhagen.

“I am excited to welcome these three data centers into our expanding platform. Their advanced capabilities, particularly in supporting AI workloads, position us to serve a rapidly growing market demand. This strategic expansion strengthens our presence in the Nordic region and offers our existing and prospective clients cutting-edge infrastructure to advance their AI initiatives,” said Maria Sundvall, CEO at CapMan Infra’s Datacenter Platform.
