The inaugural Sifted 250 is a ranking of Europe’s fastest-growing startups, by revenue, listed by compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
Combined, the 250 companies employ more than 25k people across the continent and have generated revenues of €6.86bn over the past three financial years.
They’ve raised a total of €17.67bn between them from 1,735 different investors — including VCs, CVCs, public funds, banks, angels and accelerators.
But which investors have backed the most startups in the 250? The 50 investors listed below are ranked in order of number of companies backed, the average CAGR of those portfolio companies and their average ranking positions.
Seven investors in the top 10 are either public funds or accelerators. The EIT leads the pack, with 22 investments made across all its Digital Accelerator, Manufacturing, Climate KIC, Food, InnoEnergy, Health and Mobility programmes. The UK’s startup and innovation organisations Tech Nation (20) and Innovate UK (10) followed just after, as well as French public funding vehicle Bpifrance (also 10).
Paris-based Kima Ventures tops the list of VCs, backing eight companies on the list — including two in the top 10, embedded banking startup Swan and pet insurtech Dalma.
London-based Balderton Capital is the only other VC fund in the top 10 — having invested in seven companies, five of which are headquartered outside of the UK.
HV Capital, Sequoia Capital and Antler’s investments have the highest average CAGR — the average revenue growth rate of their portfolio companies on the Sifted 250 —with four investments apiece.
It’s not only investment giants with billions in AUM who’ve backed several companies on the Sifted 250. Three well-known angels have four portfolio companies on the list each: Wonga founder Errol Damelin, serial fintech investor Chris Adelsbach and Wise cofounder and partner at Plural VC Taavet Hinrikus.
The order criteria for the ranking are as follows:
- Number of companies backed
- If equal, average CAGR of companies backed
- If equal, average ranking position of companies
