Eindhoven-based LUMO Labs, the Dutch fund manager behind impact-driven investment funds in emerging technologies, announced on Thursday the addition of Dagmar van Ravenswaay Claasen and Sabine Schoorl as Senior Partners for the upcoming LUMO Rise Fund.
LUMO Labs strengthens its partner team with two experienced female investors in digital security, compliance, impact methodologies, diversity, and sustainable cities.
“With the arrival of Dagmar and Sabine, we bring in additional knowledge, experience, and fresh perspectives that will help the team do an even better job of selecting and guiding the game-changers of tomorrow,” says Andy Lürling.
“The networks and years of experience of both in scaling technology companies fit perfectly with the phase we are entering. Dagmar’s and Sabine’s respective sector knowledge is very relevant for us regarding the expansion of our investment focus toward digital security on the technology side and expansion toward climate and sustainability solutions for urban areas about impact objectives,” adds Lürling.
Who is Sabine Schoorl?
Sabine is a seasoned tech entrepreneur and venture scout with a solid background in smart building, sustainable cities, and climate tech.
She holds an executive MBA from Yale and INSEAD and obtained her VC education from London Business School.
In 2013 Sabine co-founded a SaaS startup that serviced the Dutch real estate and construction industry. After she sold her shares, she proceeded to build one of the largest PropTech communities in Europe, which she sold in 2017.
For more than 30 years she has worked in the construction and real estate industry, where she has built an extensive network.
She has a proven track record of delivering results and driving business success with a talent for building strong relationships with clients, partners, and founders.
“I am looking forward to really making a difference by connecting my network, expertise and energy to the track record and experience of the LUMO Labs team and the extraordinary position they have acquired within the impact startup ecosystem in the Netherlands and far beyond,” Sabine adds.
Dagmar van Ravenswaay Claasen: What you need to know
Dagmar’s one-of-a-kind combination of expertise, experience, and mindset drive her to help startups and scale-ups create opportunities from regulation and outperform on impact and business goals.
With a solid background at DNB (The Dutch National Bank) and Adyen, Dagmar brings in-depth knowledge of compliance and governance as well as relevant scaling experience.
At the DNB she initiated the supervisor to be more intrusive on integrity and sustainable investments. As Director of Regulatory Affairs at Adyen during its scaling phase, she was responsible for securing the banking license, building a global team, and serving on the IPO team.
After a successful exit from Adyen, she gained valuable experience in deal sourcing and analysis in her roles as a Venture Partner at Borski Fund, among others.
She is a Supervisory Board member, advisor of FinTechs, mentor of Woman in AI, guest speaker at INSEAD, and multiple other events.
“The growth of LUMO Labs over the past period and the diligence of the team towards their portfolio companies and their investors suits me,” says Dagmar.
“Sven’s and Andy’s drive and entrepreneurship are contagious, as is their determination that financial returns and social returns on investments in emerging technologies should go hand in hand. I like to make things concrete, especially when it is not easy or self-evident, such as with ambitious impact goals,” adds Dagmar.
She continues, “My joining as senior partner of LUMO Rise fund has been a well-considered structural improvement to give promising impact-driven startups with innovative technology more momentum and direction.”
LUMO Rise Fund
The LUMO Rise Fund invests in startups that develop technological applications to improve individuals’ quality of life and well-being, foster care for others and the environment, and relieve the growing pressure on healthcare, social services, and the planet.
The LUMO Rise Fund is expected to make its first investments in mid-2024, deploying approximately €100M in capital for startup investments and guidance.
“For our current fund, we have not set quotas or made other policies about gender diversity within the teams in which we invest in recent years, but we did make quality agreements,” says Sven Bakkes.
“The result is that if you look at our current portfolio, you will see that approximately 40 per cent of the startups we have invested in have women as (co-)founders. This does not surprise us, but if you compare it to the European average of less than 2 per cent, it is striking, to say the least,” adds Bakkes.
LUMO Labs: Focuses on impact-driven startups
Founded by Andy Lürling and Sven Bakkes, LUMO Labs focuses on impact-driven software and smart hardware startups.
The current LUMO Fund II is an impact-driven multi-stage capital fund (pre-seed up to and including series A).
It includes a two-year venture builder program to support its portfolio companies in gaining financial success as well as social traction and impact.
LUMO Labs funds startups that align with at least one of the three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Sustainable Cities & Communities, Good Health & Well-Being, and Quality Education.
The fund’s investment focus includes Artificial Intelligence/Data, Blockchain, the Internet of Things, Robotics and Drones, and Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality.
