Data center firm Telehouse has signed a Power Purchase Agreement to procure energy from a wind farm in the UK.

The company and RWE this week announced a 10-year PPA to offtake from the London Array wind farm.

Under the agreement, RWE will supply a “substantial amount” of the renewable energy used at Telehouse’s London Docklands campus, until the end of 2035.

Mushtaq Choudhary, head of procurement at Telehouse Europe, said: “Telehouse is committed to enhancing energy efficiency, promoting green procurement, and reducing our carbon footprint and that of our customers. Thanks to this PPA with RWE, the electricity purchased for our London Docklands campus will continue to be derived from renewable energy sources, demonstrating our efforts to drive efficiency at our campus and deliver real benefits for our customers.”

London Array is operated by RWE and owned by a consortium of four partners (RWE, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Greencoat UK Wind PLC, and Masdar Energy UK Limited).

Located 20km off the north Kent coast in the Outer Thames Estuary, the farm’s 175 wind turbines have a total installed capacity of 630MW. It was the largest offshore wind farm in the world when it opened in 2013, and held the record until 2018.

Olaf Lubenow, head of commodity solutions UK, North & South Europe of RWE Supply & Trading, said: “This power purchase agreement ensures Telehouse and its customers have reliable access to clean, renewable electricity, providing certainty on the robustness of supply. We are pleased to support Telehouse also in its decarbonization efforts as our goal is to advance climate protection in all sectors of the economy with clean energy solutions.”

Established as Japanese telecom company KDDI’s data center arm in 1989, Telehouse’s London North facility was the first purpose-built carrier-neutral data center in Europe. Today the campus has five buildings, with more planned in the future.

RWE has signed multiple PPAs in the US with Meta totaling hundreds of megawatts. The company has also previously signed a wind deal with Vodafone in Germany, and a wind PPA in Texas with Microsoft.
