A data center could be coming to Dummerstorf in Germany.

As reported by NDR, a data center has been proposed near an Amazon logistics center on the outskirts of Rostock.

Details about the data center project are sparse.

The facility is described as potentially being "one of the largest data centers in Europe," and is also set to be powered by green electricity. There is also the possibility that a transformer station will be built on-site for this purpose.

Waste heat from the data center will also be provided to the local area and is expected to cover the majority of households in the small town of Dummerstorf, with close to 8,000 residents.

According to the NDR report, the investors and economic development agencies will make an official statement on the project at the end of the month.

Ostee-Zeitung reports that the data center will be used for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and will see an investment of at least €1 billion ($1.04m). No end-user has yet been shared, though it is expected to be decided this year.

"We are assuming an energy requirement of several hundred megawatts," an insider told Ostee-Zeitung.

Dummerstorf's mayor, Jürgen Sprank, notes that the approval process is the biggest hurdle, with the municipality already offering green energy in abundance for the project.

The potential for the project first emerged in January of 2024, when an investor purchased 70 hectares of land for €6.9 million ($7.21m) with plans to build a data center. Recent reports suggest that 32 hectares near the A20 road will be used for the data center project.

Rostock is on the north coast of Germany. The area does not have a notable data center market, with just euNetworks listed as having a colocation facility by Data Center Map.

Despite this, the city is a landing point for the Helsinki-Rostock subsea cable that was recently severed.
