Stockholm-based fintech startup Matters has emerged from stealth with a $5 million pre-seed round anchored by Swedish angel investor Jakob Johansson, alongside investors including former Klarna COO Knut Frängsmyr, Voi co-founder Douglas Stark, Röko CEO Johan Bladh, Validio CEO Patrik Tran and Evoke CEO Per Widerström. The company is developing an AI-powered personal finance platform that combines neobank services with an AI advisor to help users manage spending, increase savings and work towards financial goals. Customers will pay a flat monthly fee, while cashback from transaction-related revenue streams will be returned to them. The funding will support regulatory licensing, EU expansion, team growth, user acquisition and potential strategic acquisitions.
Founded in April 2026, Matters is building a digital banking platform designed to automate parts of personal financial management. Its planned service combines neobank features with an AI advisor intended to help customers understand their spending habits, make more informed financial decisions and increase their savings. The company is pursuing a subscription-based business model in which customers pay a fixed monthly fee. It also plans to return selected revenue generated through transactions, including interchange and foreign exchange activity, to users through a cashback scheme. Matters says this approach is intended to align its revenue model more closely with customers’ financial interests.
Per Österström, Founder and CEO of Matters, says: “Banks earn more when consumers manage their money worse. At Matters, we’re purposely travelling in the opposite direction. Our goal is to build a bank that actively makes financial wellbeing available to anyone, not just those who already enjoy it. This angel investment allows us to enact this vision. Keep an eye out for our first consumer product we are launching in the coming weeks.”
The startup is led by founder and CEO Per Österström, who previously founded Sambla Group, a consumer loan brokerage business that grew to more than 400 employees before being sold to Nordic Capital in 2021. Matters has also appointed Lars-Åke Norling, former CEO of investment and savings platform Nordnet, as chair. Norling led Nordnet during a period in which its market capitalisation increased tenfold, reaching SEK 80 billion in less than seven years, according to the company.
Lars-Åke Norling, Chair of Matters, adds: “I have spent my career in regulated consumer finance, deciphering when a financial product will and won’t work. I am therefore confident that Matters and Per, as a second-time founder with prerequisite knowledge of the field, will help consumers with their personal finances. I am proud to be joining as Chair and feel excited by Matters’ mission and the products we will reveal in the coming weeks and months.”
The pre-seed round is anchored by angel investor Jakob Johansson. Other participants include Knut Frängsmyr, former chief operating officer at Klarna; Douglas Stark, co-founder of Voi; Johan Bladh, CEO of investment company Röko; Patrik Tran, CEO of Validio; and Per Widerström, CEO of Evoke.
Matters plans to use the funding to pursue the licences required for its banking ambitions, expand across the European Union, grow its 14-person team and acquire users. The company may also use part of the capital for strategic acquisitions.
The startup has yet to publicly launch its first consumer product, which it says is expected in the coming weeks. Its longer-term ambition is to build a consumer banking platform in which AI plays a central role in helping customers manage their money.
The move comes as fintech companies increasingly explore AI applications in consumer financial services, including automated financial guidance and personalised money management. Matters will need to secure the necessary regulatory approvals as it develops its banking offering and expands into new markets.
