Helsinki-based Ambio has raised €5.1 million in a seed round led by b2venture, with participation from Montis VC and existing investor Lifeline Ventures. The startup is developing an AI-powered procurement platform for recycled plastics, covering the purchasing process from material discovery to long-term supply agreements. Its system uses verified material samples, quality documentation and transaction data to match industrial buyers with suitable recycled polymers, while Ambio acts as the supplier and takes responsibility for quality assurance. The funding will support international expansion and growth across different polymer types, as the company aims to make recycled plastics procurement more reliable and predictable for manufacturers across Europe and beyond.
Demand for recycled plastics is growing as manufacturers respond to sustainability goals, regulatory requirements and customer expectations. Recycled polymers can also offer cost advantages and help reduce reliance on fossil-based raw materials imported from outside Europe. However, purchasing recycled plastics remains challenging for industrial buyers. Material properties can vary depending on their source, processing history and individual batch, while quality data is often incomplete or inconsistent. As a result, manufacturers may not know whether a material will meet production requirements until it has been tested on the production line.
Ambio aims to address this uncertainty through an AI-native procurement platform that brings material discovery, qualification and supply management into one process. The company assesses materials using samples, documentation and defined quality protocols, building a structured dataset covering material properties, suppliers, pricing and transaction outcomes.
Its matching engine uses this data to improve material recommendations, quotations and procurement execution over time. Ambio also operates as a principal supplier rather than solely providing software or marketplace access, taking responsibility for quality assurance and coordinating the supply chain between recycled-plastic producers and industrial buyers.
The company aims to make recycled polymers as predictable to purchase as virgin plastics, potentially helping manufacturers incorporate more recycled material into their production processes.
CEO Tommi Bergström believes the widespread adoption of recycled plastics is held back by trust rather than only regulatory measures: “People in the industry like to talk about regulation and the EU. We are a startup, we cannot yet impact what happens in Brussels. What we can impact is the purchasing experience for the buyer. When you’re buying virgin plastics, you know exactly what you’re getting. When you’re buying recycled, you’ll know if it works when it’s running in your production line. Our goal is to predict if the material works or not before sampling even happens.”
The €5.1 million seed round was led by European venture capital firm b2venture, with Montis VC and existing investor Lifeline Ventures also participating.
Ambio will use the capital to expand internationally and broaden its offering across different polymer types. Its longer-term ambition is to build a pan-European procurement and verification infrastructure for recycled plastics, using accumulated quality data and AI-driven matching to improve reliability as transaction volumes grow.
According to b2venture partner Mathias Ockenfels, the investment case includes Ambio’s proprietary dataset, its supplier model and an AI engine that improves as it processes additional transactions and quality information. The investor sees potential for the company to become a central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and other markets.
“We are backing Ambio not only because of the talented team led by Tommi and Elmo but also because of the compounding competitive moat the business is built on: a proprietary dataset on recyclate quality, a principal model that builds trust with buyers and sellers, and an agentic engine that turns every transaction and quality data point into improved matchmaking. We are convinced that Ambio will become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond,” says Mathias Ockenfels, Partner at b2venture.
By improving the reliability of recycled-material procurement, Ambio aims to help manufacturers increase their use of recycled polymers while strengthening European supply chains and reducing dependence on imported fossil resources.
