AI cloud firm Sharon AI has acquired a former paper mill in New South Wales, Australia.
As reported by local press, including ABC, Sharon AI has acquired the former Visy paper mill site at Ettamogah, north of Albury. The site was reportedly acquired for around AU$50 million (US$35.6).
Albury is an Australian city in southern New South Wales, on the border with Victoria. Leading Edge DC has a 750kW Edge facility in the city close to Albury Airport.
“Sharon AI has purchased a paper mill in Ettamogah, with plans to return the underutilized brownfield site into a running operation that benefits the local community,” a spokesperson told press. “We will say more at a later date.
The site, along R W Henry Drive, was built in the 1980s for Australian Newsprint Mills and later Norske Skog, which took over in 2000.
The site closed in late 2019, with Visy buying the plant for AU$85 million, running it as a warehouse and transport depot since taking it over in 2020.
Packaging, recycling, and logistics firm Visy told the press it would continue on as a tenant at the site, utilizing warehouse and logistics space.
Local MP Justin Clancy noted there is “understandably growing community interest about what may come next,” adding: “If data centers are going to grow at this scale, we need to get the rules right — and make sure communities like ours are properly protected.”
Sharon currently utilizes Equinix in Sydney and NextDC in Melbourne for data center capacity. The company also lists GreenSqaare and CDC as data center partners in its most recent earnings presentation.
The company said it has 212MW of capacity online or in development, and some 64,000 Nvidia GPUs due to be deployed by mid-2027.
The firm, which went public earlier this year, also has a large project planned in the US in Texas.
