Japan’s Toyo Corporation has purchased a second quantum computer from Finnish quantum firm IQM.

According to IQM Quantum Computers, the Spark system will be installed in Toyo’s R&D center in Kiba, Tokyo, and is expected to be operational in early 2027.

IQM’s Spark quantum computers have been specifically tailored for universities and research labs, offering high single-qubit and two-qubit gate fidelity, which the company says allows for reliable and accurate quantum applications. The systems come equipped with an “advanced cryogenic system” that operates at a temperature of about 20 millikelvin, close to absolute zero (-273.15°C or -459.67°F).

The news comes five months after Toyo announced it has purchased a 20-qubit Radiance quantum computer from IQM, a sale which reportedly represented the first enterprise quantum computer deployment in Japan. Installation of that system is planned for 2026 at the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI technology (G-QuAT), a research facility operated by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tokyo.

Toyo is a Japanese provider of advanced measurement solutions primarily across the automotive, energy, and ICT sectors. In a statement, the company said that once the systems are operational, they will be made available to domestic companies, organizations, research institutes, and universities. The two quantum computers will also serve as a testbed for evaluating and verifying components and technologies used in superconducting quantum computers.

The Japanese government is currently undertaking an ambitious project that is targeting 10 million domestic users of quantum technology and 50 trillion yen ($315bn) in quantum-generated production value by the end of the decade.

“What makes this purchase matter isn’t that Toyo bought a second system, it’s what they’re choosing to do with them,” said Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers. “That is the entire idea behind owning your own machine; you get to decide whom it serves. Japan has quantum goals to hit by 2030. You don’t get there with machines nobody else can touch; you get there because a company like Toyo chose to share access to the ones it now owns.”

Toshiya Kohno, representative director, president, and CEO at Toyo, added: “We believe that accelerating the adoption of quantum technologies requires environments where companies, universities, and researchers can gain hands-on experience with real quantum computers. By deploying IQM Spark at our R&D center and linking it with IQM Radiance 20, we will support a broad range of needs across different stages of quantum adoption, including talent development, technology validation, use case creation, and advanced research.”

Founded in Helsinki, Finland, in 2018, IQM brings full-stack quantum computers and applications to HPCs, research institutes, universities, and business enterprises. The company operates quantum data centers in Finland and Munich, Germany, offering cloud-based access to its systems. It has delivered quantum systems to supercomputing centers in South Korea, Poland, Italy, and Taiwan.

In July 2026, the company began trading on the Nasdaq, having completed its Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) merger with Real Asset Acquisition Corp. (RAAQ).
