Stockholm-based Solace Care has raised €2.1 million in a pre-seed round led by Spintop Ventures, with the participation from Plug and Play Insurtech, Wave Ventures and a group of Nordic insurance executives, including former ICA Försäkring CEO Caroline Farberger and former Fennia CEO Tomi Yli-Kyyny. Founded in 2025 by former Mindler executives Valtteri Korkiakoski and Josef Karakoca, Solace Care provides a digital platform for legacy planning and post-loss administration, helping users organize documents and wishes before death and guiding families through practical tasks following a death. The company says its service currently covers more than 25,000 lives across Sweden, Finland and Norway. The new funding will support the expansion of its partnerships with insurers and brokers, market entry in the Netherlands and UK, and additional hires in product and commercial operations.
Solace Care is a digital platform for legacy planning and support after loss. It helps people put their affairs in order while they still can, and guides their families through the practical and emotional work that follows a death. Sold through life insurers and brokers, it turns a financial product into a service families use when they need it most. Solace Care was founded in January 2025 by Valtteri Korkiakoski and Josef Karakoca, a Finnish-Swedish founding pair who previously helped build and scale Mindler, one of Sweden’s fastest-growing digital healthcare companies. Korkiakoski is a medical doctor who founded Medified, a mental health treatment monitoring app, and sold it to Mindler in 2022. Karakoca was VP of Engineering at Mindler. Solace Care is based at Founders House in Stockholm and operates across Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Losing someone takes a moment. Untangling their life takes months. Settling the estate means every account, contract and asset must be found, documented and closed — a process no one is prepared for and no one can fully opt out of. The insurance industry has always managed the payout. The other months of work have been left to relatives to deal with in the middle of grief. It happens in every family, in every country, and until now nobody has built support for it.
“Today, insurance pays out and then the family is on their own for the next six months,” says Valtteri Korkiakoski, CEO and co-founder of Solace Care. “We are redefining personal insurance, so the support is not only a payment. It should help the family keep going.”
Before a loss, policyholders use Solace Care to record their wishes, gather documents, and leave clear instructions — a vault they can share with family, extending coverage from the insured individual to the people who will actually do the work. After a loss, the family is guided through the practical administration, institution by institution, with human support alongside the platform.
Solace Care went from its first policyholders in mid-2025 to more than 25,000 covered lives across Sweden, Finland and Norway.
“A year ago we had zero covered lives,” says Korkiakoski. “The growth has not come from marketing. It has come from partners who put it in front of their customers and saw the positive response to the product.”
The service is available today in Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian with on-going plans to scale into the Danish and Dutch markets.
“A product that does nothing for you until you die is a tough sell to a healthy 35-year-old,” says Josef Karakoca, CTO and co-founder of Solace Care. “Put planning and support around it and the same policy suddenly does something for the family right now, not just after loss. Thatʼs the value weʼre building.ˮ
The round was led by Spintop Ventures, with participation from Plug and Play, the global InsurTech investor whose network includes major carriers, alongside a group of senior Nordic insurance leaders investing personally: Caroline Farberger (former CEO of ICA Försäkring), Fredrik Solberg (former CEO of Eir Insurance, previously senior finance roles at Zurich Insurance), Emil Lagerstedt-Karlsson (former VP Insurance & Insurtech at Insurely), Tomi Yli-Kyyny (former CEO of Fennia) and Stefan Moritz (former Head of Innovation at Max Matthiessen), together with Further Than Capital, Mattias Miksche, Krim Talia and Wave Ventures.
Selling into an insurance ecosystem means enterprise sales cycles, procurement reviews, and long gaps between a first meeting and the first onboarded policyholder — followed by tens of thousands of covered lives arriving at once when a partner goes live. An investor base of people who have run carriers themselves shortens that conversation.
“Life insurance has been sold on the same promise for decades,” says Erik Wenngren, Partner at Spintop Ventures. “Solace Care changes what the product actually delivers to a family, both before and after a loss. That is rare in this industry, and the team has the operating history to execute it.”
The capital will build out enterprise sales capability: deepening existing Nordic carrier and broker partnerships, opening the Netherlands and the UK, where Solace Care has already appointed local commercial advisors, and adding senior hires in product and commercial operations.
“Europe is aging rapidly, and no European player owns this end-of-life space yet,” says Korkiakoski. “We will change the way we think about death and insurance.”
