A Norwegian developer has withdrawn their proposal to build a 50MW data center in the city of Oton, Philippines.
Daniel Stefan Robertsen, a Norwegian national who called himself the managing director of a data center development company called Norway Green Energy, withdrew the application on Sunday 16 August, two days after a testy public consultation which concluded with Robertsen threatening reporters covering the event.
“If you think what I’ve said is something toxic and you don’t want it, let’s stop the discussion now,” Robertsen was filmed saying at the end of the consultation on Friday, 14 August.
Robertsen then told journalists that they were violating the Philippines’ privacy laws by filming him.
“If you don’t have [sic] brain, just, fuck, go away,” he said
Robertsen’s proposal called for the construction of a 10-hectare facility in the barangay – an administrative division – of Abilay Sur, located between Oton and Iloilo City.
Little is known about Robertsen or Norway Green Energy. According to a 2018 press release by Bitcoin mining firm Riot Platforms, Robertsen was previously president of Digital Green Energy Corp – a Riot Platforms subsidiary – from January 24, 2018.
Prior to that, the press release states that he was chairman and CEO of blockchain company Bitfury Norway, and also worked at hardware manufacturer Datacom Systems, Norwegian telco Telenor, and Facebook.
But it is unclear when Robertsen left Digital Green Energy Corp and created Norway Green Energy.
Most of the Philippines’ data centers are located on the island of Luzon, which is home to the country’s capital city, Manila. DataCenterMap lists no data centers in Oton or Panay, which is the island upon which Oton sits.
