Riding the heatwaves: The modernization imperative for data center resiliency

Our climate is changing, and quickly. In the last few weeks, Europe has faced some of the hottest temperatures on record, with the World Meteorological Organization citing the impact of heatwaves on human health, agriculture, infrastructure, and major weather events including storms, drought and wildfires taking place across the region.

At the same time, the UK Met office has reported the number of days where average temperatures exceeded 28°C has doubled, while the number of days with temperatures reaching 30°C or more has trebled.

Heatwaves are no longer isolated events – they are becoming a recurring operational challenge that organizations must proactively address. In the face of more frequent heatwaves, and increasingly sustained periods of high average temperatures, the strain on mission-critical systems is exacerbated. They increase the risk of data center overheating.

During these times, the physical infrastructure components that make up the data center – including power, cooling systems, GPUs and servers – must all work harder to maintain reliability; primarily because higher temperatures mean greater stress and consequently, a greater chance of failure. Stress points must, therefore, be quickly identified to mitigate downtime, and energy technology, data intelligence, and real-time analytics are vital to enable preventative measures.

As unexpected weather events increase in frequency and severity, how can data centers begin to cope with the thermal management challenges associated with heatwaves, and mitigate them?

Modernizing data center cooling for greater resilience and reliability

Today, data center modernization is no longer driven solely by AI adoption. As heatwaves become more frequent, workloads continue to intensify, and with extreme temperatures placing greater pressure on critical infrastructure, organizations must ensure their cooling systems are capable of delivering reliable performance and optimal efficiency under increasingly challenging conditions.

Modernization should not stop at infrastructure upgrades alone. Regular servicing and planned preventative maintenance must form a core part of seasonal readiness strategies

As organizations deploy larger GPU clusters and support increasingly demanding AI workloads, traditional cooling approaches may become insufficient. Modern AI environments require advanced thermal management strategies designed for high-density computing, making AI data center cooling a growing priority for operators seeking to protect critical infrastructure investments. As the largest consumer of power away from the IT and GPUs, cooling system capacities must be continuously reviewed to ensure the highest levels of energy efficiency, resiliency and sustained performance.

For facility operators experiencing continued hotspots, outages or airflow issues, using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) platform allows them to quickly model and identify issues, and validate any changes to cooling capacities before the work is undertaken.

Operators can add simple fixes like blanking panels, test their system against a range of dynamic load profiles, or implement a hot or cold-aisle containment system (HACS/CACS) like Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure™ row data center, allowing them to quickly improve cooling at the touch of a button.

Additionally, adding or upgrading a CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) system may improve thermal dynamics immediately – allowing operators to improve spend, minimize energy wastage and ensure that the data center is performing at optimum performance during peak temperatures.

However, modernization should not stop at infrastructure upgrades alone. Regular servicing and planned preventative maintenance must form a core part of seasonal readiness strategies. Routine maintenance helps extend equipment life, optimize overall data center performance and identify potential issues before they escalate into critical failures. Operators should also ensure cooling systems are tuned to perform efficiently during the summer months while remaining optimized for lower-demand winter conditions.

How software and services support reliable data center operations

Modernization is most effective when paired with intelligent software and expert services that provide continuous oversight. Whether deploying AI workloads in enterprise, cloud, or Edge environments, maintaining optimal data center temperatures is paramount to deliver the highest standards of uptime – and protecting your investment as heat can lead to failure and chips are an expensive investment for data centers.

High-density racks, for instance, are sensitive to increased power fluctuations and like traditional servers, changes in temperature. During times of increased grid stress or higher external temperatures, there is a greater likelihood of outages, making server or GPU reliability harder to assure.

For enterprise, hyperscale, neocloud, and colocation operators seeking to mitigate these issues, using advanced software and services, can reduce power, cooling and electrical failures by up to 70 percent – combining real-time analytics with data-driven insights to identify hotspots, faulty power and cooling systems, and proactively deploy service personnel to remediate them.

Heatwaves may be unavoidable, but downtime doesn’t have to be. Modernizing cooling infrastructure, implementing preventative maintenance and leveraging real-time operational intelligence can help data centers remain efficient, resilient and always available.
