Brinell Compute prepares for construction of AI data center in Maritsa, Bulgaria

German data center developer Brinell Compute has announced that its construction of an AI data center in the municipality of Maritsa, southern Bulgaria, will begin this Fall.

The facility will occupy 2,000 acres (809 hectares) of land in the Rakovski Industrial Zone north of the city of Plovdiv. Brinell’s total investment in the scheme will be €3 billion ($3.4bn), as per reporting by Blitz.bg. No details have been released so far about the data center’s estimated compute capacity.

DCD has approached Brinell Compute for comment.

The site will not be “a conveyor for the physical production of robots,” unnamed local government officials told Blitz.bg. “This is a specialized data center with enormous computing power and supercomputers, where complex algorithms are trained, and data sets are processed.”

Details of Brinell Compute’s investment in Maritsa emerged earlier this year, when minutes were released from a meeting of Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers held on January 21. At that session, the Bulgarian government signed a memorandum of understanding with Brinell Compute formalizing the intention of both parties to develop a data center in the region. It remains unclear who the ultimate corporate users of the data center will be, though negotiations between its developers and US technology firms are underway, claimed economic.bg.

Registered in September 2025 in the German city of Munich, Brinell Compute claims to manage over 4GW of energy infrastructure and €2.5 billion ($2.84bn) in financing to develop future projects. Bulgaria’s data center market is relatively large for Eastern Europe, hosting 30 facilities according to DataCenterMap, but new foreign investors have proven few and far between. Expansion in the short-term, however, is likely. In May, Bulgarian politician Tomislav Donchev announced that the country’s government had authorized three new data center projects: one with a German firm named Schwarz Digits, another unnamed German company (presumably Brinell Compute), and a large US developer.

Learn more about the data center market in Poland and Eastern Europe, and meet with other executives and experts from the region at the DCN Warsaw event later this year.
