The Quebec government in Canada has announced plans to invest around CA$27.7 million ($19.5m) in the construction of 17 new cell sites in ten regions.
As reported by Radio Canada (translated from French), the cell tower construction plans were confirmed by the Minister of Cybersecurity and Digital Affairs and President of the Treasury Board, France-Élaine Duranceau.
“Each site represents a tower that is being built,” Duranceau told Vivement le retour, a Radio Canada radio show.
“The sites were chosen to maximize the number of citizens who would be served within the available budget. The locations were selected to have the greatest possible impact on the largest number of citizens.”
The planned cell tower builds will be constructed in Estrie, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Centre-du-Québec, Chaudière-Appalaches, Côte-Nord, Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Lanaudière, Laurentides, Outaouais, and Mauricie.
Duranceau noted that the builds are expected to be operational by 2028.
The towers will be added to the commissioning of 211 towers, which were announced by the Coalition Avenir Québec in 2022 and 2024.
