Nordic data center developer EcoDataCenter has signed a 10MW hydroelectric Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Finnish energy company Fortum to supply its data center in Falun, Sweden.
As per the terms of the PPA, EcoDataCenter will purchase power from Fortum’s hydroelectric power plant in Dalälven, as well as acquire the guarantees of origin generated by the project. The PPA has a four-year tenor, extending between 2026 and 2030. In addition to the PPA, Fortum will also take responsibility for the physical delivery of power and balance responsibilities at the data center.
The data center entered commercial operations back in 2019 and hosts capacity for neocloud Coreweave.
“Our roots in Dalarna and the close collaboration with local power producers are a key to growth – for us and for the industry as a whole. The agreement with Fortum, which provides our facility in Falun with power directly from the Dalälven River, is a good example of this. When data centers and energy companies plan together, natural solutions arise that create new opportunities for the entire region,” said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.
“Data centers are an important and growing industry that we at Fortum see great potential in. This is a significant first step for us in Sweden in a conscious investment in this segment. The fact that we can start this journey in Dalarna, where we have such a strong local presence with our hydropower, makes it extra rewarding,” added Simon-Erik Ollus, head of large accounts and electricity market at Fortum.
Fortum currently operates 39 hydroelectric power plants along the Dalälven River, with a combined capacity of 970MW. The exact plant contracted to feed power to the data center has not been disclosed. In addition to its numerous energy supply deals with data center operators, Fortum has expanded into data center development. The company is advancing projects in Pennala, Rauma, Klaukkala, Harjavalta, and Jyväskylä.
EcoDataCenter was formed in 2015 as a joint venture between local energy company Falu Energi & Vatten and data center operator EcoDC AB. Nordic real estate developer Areim took a majority stake in the firm via the Areim Fund III for around SEK 200 million ($22m) in 2018 and merged it with Swedish operator Fortlax in 2019.
In April 2025, EcoDataCenter sold three facilities in Sweden to CapMan Infra as part of a hyperscale pivot. Two of the data centers are located in Stockholm and one in Piteå.
In February, the firm announced that French AI firm Mistral would deploy AI compute at EcoDataCenter’s facilities in Sweden.
