Verne has broken ground on a new data center in Finland.
The company this week announced construction had started on the first 70MW of its data center campus in the Kapuli area of Mäntsälä.
“This is an important step for Verne in Finland,” said Kim Gunnelius, managing director, Finland at Verne.
“Mäntsälä brings together the energy infrastructure, local partnerships, and operating conditions needed for high-density computing at scale. As demand continues to grow, we want to build infrastructure that not only supports our customers, but also contributes positively to the local community and regional economy.”
The company first announced plans to develop on a 10-hectare site in 2024.
Verne entered Finland in 2022 when it acquired Ficolo, taking over sites in Helsinki, Pori, and Tampere. The company sold the Pori and Tampere sites to Nordic cloud firm Glesys last year.
“We are very pleased to see Verne take this important next step in Mäntsälä,” said Hannu Laurila, Mayor of Mäntsälä. “This investment creates significant opportunities for our municipality and the wider region, not only through the site itself, but through the wider network of suppliers, service providers, energy partners, and other businesses that can grow around it. Mäntsälä has the location, infrastructure, and reliable power grid needed for long-term, future-focused investment.”
Verne was founded as an Icelandic data center firm. After being acquired by D9 in 2021, it was merged with Finnish data center firm Ficolo and London’s Volta Data Centres.
The combined company was sold to investment firm Ardian in 2024 as D9 was wound down. The company is also developing a site in France.
